Anyone else suffered the cold after bypass? My husband is almost 4 weeks post op and constantly feels cold and has to wear hoodies and tracksuit bottoms even when it’s hot out 🥵

Hello,

Has your husband been prescribed beta blockers?

A possible side effect of beta blockers is to develop Raynauds Phenomenon.

I live with Raynauds Phenomenon and I always feel cold too. I am just emerging from my many winter layers.

I suggest your husband talks to his GP about this possible side effect.

I was same age as your husband when I had my triple bypass surgery. I also felt the cold more than normal. When asked about it at the rehab classes I was told that due to the amount of drugs I was on after surgery this was quite normal. Beta blockers. Blood thinners. Drugs to keep your heart and blood pressure lower all contribute. But after about six months things slowly began getting better. Still feels a little different but nothing I worry about.

Ask at the GPS or rehab clinic. I sure it will pass given time.

Dear You,

Exactly the same and as others have said it could be down to the beta blockers, I still have my wool bobble hat on ! and I don't care { was never gonna be a model } hope he feels warmer soon

I had 5x CABG in 2019. Before this I would be shorts and T shirts in winter but now I am always cold. Temps at the moment are high but I've still got the winter weight quilt on the bed and an extra blanket...Giant68

Agree with other posts. My husband had a cabg and has felt the cold ever since. The consultant advised him that it is the bisoprolol causing it

My husband had a 3x bypass in 2017 and he always says that he feels the cold - still has his winter duvet in June. He thinks it is down to the medication - with beta blockers and aspirin all thinning the blood and lowering blood pressure; but he would rather be cold than the alternative x

welcome to the world of blood circulation change caused my lots of new meds. I’m now a year post quadruple bypass and no change. My wife loves it as she is always cold and now it’s an excuse to put the heating back on.

Hi. Like everyone else who has responded, since having my CABG in 2020 I have really felt the cold. I am not on beta blockers but I do take a wide range of meds including blood thinners. Really suffered with cold feet and chilblains this winter too which was a first.

Yes, had the same post op for mitral valve repair. Unfortunately it was end of November, and I sat freezing all the time. Kept having to turn the heating up, cost a fortune but I didn't care, I just wanted to be warm. It improved after a few months (and I have now paid off the gas bill!)

I recently had a heart attack and a stent fitted and out on a myriad of tablets including beta blockers and blood thinners and while the temperature has been high I have been wearing cardigans and shawls and not feeling the heat at all.

My husband had stents fitted and takes lots of medication. He is constantly cold now whereas he always had warm hands and feet all year round.

Hello I’m 7 months post triple heart bypass and have the same problem, always cold and just can’t get warm. It’s an inner coldness as well as cold to the touch with some days being worse than others. My cardiac rehab nurse has said it’s a side effect of Bisoprolol. Is your husband on this med ?

My husband had a stemi and when he came home with the bag of meds he was started on 10 mg I think of metropolo. His feet turned purple he was so cold. I called cardiologist (husnad seemed to think he was doomed ) who changes the beta blocker and dropped the dose to 1/4 of a pill. Still feels the cold but is no longer blue.

Cabg X4 and I hear your pain.Don believe anyone who says it stands for "cardiac artery bypass graft" it means "cold and blue ggggggrrrr" but you do get used to it, and it's mostly down to medication.

Regard it as a warning to avoid the bad habits we all had before a highly trained man with a knife did stuff to you when you were asleep. The is a benefit however, being cold is a good reason to excersise, a bit of jumping up and down gets the blood pumping and that is the reason for the cabg in the first place.

Speak to your doctor perhaps they can do something about it, but you can look forward to the one year point, medication review, they cut my clopli dog and beata blocker and that made a bit of a difference.

Until then enjoy the summer and possibly by the time that the autumn comes you will be better able to deal with it. At the moment it's still shiny and new, and you are still definitely in the recovery phase.

A slight benefit is that winter Woolies are on sale in summer.

Stick with it,it gets better.

2 years in from a triple. I was always called 'nesh' prior to my op and felt the cold. I felt it more following the op but its improving and I still spend as little time in the chilled aisle in the supermarket as possible. It will get better but a little Reynauds in a couple of fingers may be present.

It seems to be normal after having a Bypass to feel the cold. After my Bypass I seriously feel the cold and have lovely blankets around the house now. Legs and hands get cold very quickly and it's probably down to one of the medications we take.
