Had a heart valve transplant in 2014 which went fine but although valve is working good my pulomony pressure has gone up from 28mmHG in 2017 to 63 today no-one knows why the cardiologist has asked for a ct scan which could be 6 weeks wait and has put me on a water tablet and blood pressure tablet although my blood pressure is measuring fine have I got heart failure? I'm worried sick I'm 68yrs old.

Hi Sherob54

I’m sorry to hear about your recent results. I can understand why they might be worrying for you.

Although no one can say whether you’re in heart failure or not, please follow your doctors advice and take the medication as instructed. It’s always good to have a proactive cardiologist, and I can see they’ve booked you in for an appointment in the meantime. I appreciate the anxiety that you’ll feel in the wait up to your appointment however, even if it is a case of heart failure, many people will tell you on here that the term is not as scary as it sounds. It is treatable and people go onto live normal lives with this.

However, before your appointment, if you find that you have any worsening symptoms, or new symptoms, please contact 111 or your GP as I understand that 6 weeks is a little while away.

I hope others will be by to share their experiences of a similar situation to yours.

All the best.

Tos

Thank-you so much for your positive reply Tos I feel happier after reading it. I will ring 111 if I get any problems at the moment I'm trying to keep busy and not let my imagination run riot. Thanks again.x

Hello Sherob54

High pulmonary pressure is not a sign of heart failure but possibly a blockage? That is probably why the cardiologist has requested a CT scan, to check your heart for blockages.

Heart failure typically can be diagnosed with a simple echocardiogram.

All the best for your scan!

Hi, Sherob54,

I am sorry to hear about your health concerns.

I am wondering whether your higher pulmonary pressure could be part of pulmonary arterial hypertension. Perhaps you could talk with your doctor about whether you should be evaluated for that. That disease has many of the same symptoms that we look at in heart disease too. Plus, I think that it can lead to heart failure.

I certainly do not know much about pulmonary arterial hypertension, but it might be worth a chat with your doctor. Plus, you can read information here:

myphteam.com

That is a support group for people living with pulmonary hypertension, but they also have articles about it.

I hope that you can get your symptoms sorted soon and get a diagnosis that can help you Take care. 😊

Thank-you for your reply Smitty I think your right my cardiologist did mention pulomony arterial hypertension, it's just remembering everything he said I just wish I was having my scan earlier. I've just found that support group i will definitely contact them as living alone I'm just going over everything again and again. Thanks again.x

İ can totally understand that you are worried sick and that your imagination is running riot. That is perfectly normal when you get some shock news about your health and particularly so, when nobody can explain it! İ had an echo last month and was told that not only was my leaking mitral valve worse but I now have pulmonary hypertension and another leaking valve - the tricuspid! İ had not even heard of pulmonary hypertension and looking it up scared me silly. However, there are lots of drugs out there apparently to manage the condition. The BHF nurses recommended that İ contacted the pulmonary hypertension association, which has lots of information. The good news is that you have a scan in 6 weeks. You could always ring up and say you will have a cancellation. Hopefully once they understand why, they can treat and reduce it. Also, time to really spoil yourself while you're waiting. Get that bar of chocolate, pair of shoes, etc! Wishing you all the very best x
