Microvascular angina and iron deficiency

I have suffered from micro vascular angina for 3 years and I now have been told I have low ferritin. I started heme iron supplements 4weeks ago and I have started to feel short of breath/air hungry.

I am interested to know;

a)If there is a link between MVA and iron deficiency

b)If breathlessness can be a side effect of starting Heme Iron

Hello. That's just the same as me! I'm only just being diagnosed but had symptoms over a year. Gp rung the other day saying my bloods were out and need to see him. I'm assuming it's cos my iron is low cos I'm out of breath all the time. Don't you normally get out of breath? I've got stop talking to take a breath 🤭Hope you get some information on this though

Hello,

I noticed from your bio that you took part in the PRIZE trial. I was unable to take part in the trial because I have vasospastic angina.

Do feel Zibotentan is going to help ?

There does seem to be growing evidence that there is an association between anaemia and microvascular angina.

Did your GP suggest you take Heme iron supplement in response to your blood results?

I suggest you discuss your breathlessness with your GP and ask if you can be prescribed an alternative to treat your low ferritin levels.

It might also be worth asking for a review of your medication by your Cardiologist. Your breathlessness maybe related to your microvascular angina rather than your anaemia.

Hello milk fairy and thank you for your comments. I apologize for not posting earlier regarding the Prize trial. I found that Zibotentan definitely made a difference to my angina symptoms but I did suffer some troublesome side effects. I hope the drug will be approved and am Feel fairly confident it will be of value.Regarding the low fertitin, I was given ferrous fumerate which upset me and then ferrous sulphate which caused my heart rate to increase and now I have been taking heme iron for 4werks and on maximum dose for 2 weeks. About 2 weeks ago I started feeling short of breath and last week had to spend days in bed I was so exhausted and felt SOB, however I stopped taking the heme on Saturday and today and yesterday have felt much better. I have an appointment with G.P. on Wednesday but don't see Cardiologist until August.

Thank you for the information. It would be fantastic news for patients if Zibotentan helps as long as the side effects aren't too troublesome.

Perhaps ask your GP about Floradix, it's often advised for pregnant women who are intolerant of the usual iron therapy by midwives.

Yes it would be fantastic if Zibotentan proved to be a useful drug. I would mention that I improved for six months after the trial and the Cardiologist thought it might be a legacy of taking Zibotentan.I will ask the G.P. about taking Floridix, thank you.

as Milkfairy says, your breathlessness maybe related to your microvascular angina rather than your anaemia, but breathlessness id common in anaemia because your blood can not carry oxygen as effectively as it should when you are anaemic - iron plays an imporant part in carrying oxygen, so if you are short of this you have too few delivery vans to get the oxygen to where it is needed, so you run short
