im 58 and I had a stemi two weeks ago, i have had "occastional "idiopathic angeodema for about 20 years but since being on several heart medicines this past two weeks ive had it every day ,ive heard that ramipril may be the possible cause, is there an alternative to ramipril that does not cause angeodema , hope you can help. Thanks Tony (male)

Hi Hatflinger. I have been on heart meds for 9 years with no main issues until I developed side effects diagnosed as angiodema two years ago. Mine started as numbness and swelling one side of my mouth or swelling of the tongue. Usually started in the early hours and abated by mid morning, frequency about once a week. I consulted the GP who immediately suggested the cause was Ramipril and referred me to a heart clinic at the local hospital. The cardiologist swapped Ramipril to Losartan. Note that my condition after an MI is heart failure with low blood pressure and Ramipril was supposed to help my heart cope with that and Losartan was prescribed to have the same effect. Taking Losartan gave me a lot of wind and loose bowels which I put up with for a while as the angiodema had stopped but eventually went back to the GP. The suggestion was then to stop the Losartan which immediately sorted out the bowel problem. I have been referred back to the heart clinic, due in April. After three months of neither Ramipril nor Losartan angiodema effects have started again so it must be something else. Your immediate reaction could well be due to Ramipril. I have booked to talk through all my meds with a pharmacist before I go back to the heart clinic. I am hoping that a pharmacist might have a more focused approach to any rebalancing of medication that I need. Good luck with your journey through the new medication you are on.
