With heart failure and heart troubles we all obviously suffer more with pretty much everything going including sleep or lack of.
But do any of you specifically suffer from being waken up by your heart/mind, maybe a saftey trigger or something and you wake with feeling of numbness/pins and needles somewhere in arm (left or right) and sometimes face?
It is not from laying in a awkward position and having a dead arm as such. Usually laid comfortably on back. Is this just a normal symptom of heart failure? It goes away once i am awake and move around a little. (then i am up all night)
Morning, Yes I do, but it's in my hand normally left side. I don't lay on it either. I actually thought because of DCM and lVT it was probably due to that.
I haven't mentioned it to my HF nurse but I might next time for clarification.
I've virtually given up on sleep 😴. I can't get comfortable and when I finally do my mind starts racing at every little twinge!
Hope you get some answers.

As a long shot suggestion, I had carpal tunnel syndrome which causes pins and needles and pain in one or both arms (but not the face) and is caused by a trapped nerve at the wrist. I had it in both arms and over time it got worse, was only temporarily cured by steroid injections, and I ended up with really uncomfortable nights in spite of wearing wrist braces which can help in some cases. The cure is a simple procedure under a local which meant I was in theatre for about 40 minutes since I had both wrists done at the same time, and although it was very inconvenient for a week or so as I healed, the procedure was a complete success.
My husband has HF, he doesn't get pins & needles but he does get incredibly painful cramp particularly in his hands & he also has Raynaud disease in his hands & feet. Electrolytes imbalance, which is quite common in heart failure, can cause tingling/numbness in your limbs. Have you been tested to check that's not an issue?
Great name on here love it, erm yeah I use to have this problem but it was like my left side particularly arm and hand was like sooooo numb and as soon as would wake up sensation was gone but I now realise I had 2 vitamin defiencys which were probably contributing to that. Also since I have been on verapamil for ventricular Tachycardia haven't had that sensation since. Do you have any arrhythmia issues or take anything for it?? Just a thought I'm not 100% certain that it is that but just rememberd haven't had that problem since being on them meds.
Hope you can get some information from your consultant. Take care 😘
Thank you, my husband is having an ablation at the end of March. I just wondered if it's normal to be kept in hospital overnight if you have a VT ablation or if they're being very cautious with my husband as he's been poorly recently. I know if you have an ablation for Afib it's usually just a day job.
Yeah there probably being cautious. I know my friend was kept in over night she also had implanted device to shock the heart back into rhythm. Does your hubby have any thing like this??.
Yes, he has an ICD that shocked him 3 times as he had a VT storm and lost consciousness a few times. Plus the hospital shocked him twice when he was in re-sus to try & get in back in sinus rhythm but that didn't work either. Eventually they chemically cardioverted him, that didn't stop the arrythimias but did reduce them. I know they're doing the ablation as they're concerned about the ongoing frequency & severity of the VT's. I've been researching vt ablation but can't find much info about them everything seems to point to Afib ablations. I assume it's the same procedure but is the success rate similar!
Thank you. I was in Afib but that got reset back to a normal sinus rhythm by a cardioversion. I do however still get ectopic beats, skipped beats now. Everyday and a fair bit. This problem isn't every night though but does happen when i am having trouble sleeping and had little sleep. Very strange x
I had the same feelings in arm and hand at night. I’d get up and walk around and it would disappear. Was tested - carpal tunnel- had surgery done- cured it
Good Morning to The onethatgotaway.Yes I totally understand what you are
going through as I also are constantly every night experience numbness woken up with pins and needles cramps sharp along with constant chest pains and then for the very 1st time the left side of my face went numb.
For me I have central chest pains and day, night the whole of my left side is in server pain.
I have only experienced right side chest pains 5 times in my life.
Oh dear. Have you had them investigated? I went through a stage of it being quite often and chest pains, sweats and pins needles. Then it calmed down. Now its every now and then.So not sure if its just the heart failure itself or if its when i have had a high salt meal or lack of exercise that day. Pretty lost of with it. Tbh.
Good Morning totheonethatgotaway.Yes I have hall the investigations and was told by my Heart Professor Surgeon that all of this that I am experiencing is part of my Heart Failure.
I have been given my surgery date and I am extremely grateful to have now peace of mind more so now than ever.
I do wake up with pins and needles often down my left arm and hand and sometimes into my face/ neck. Never happens on my right side. I’ve always thought that this was indicative of a potential heart issue, however I’ve had all the tests including going for a stent procedure and they found only mild heart disease. In my case I have no idea why I would be getting these cramps other than I do a very physical job and I’ve had previous issues with the rotator cuff in my left shoulder so possibly it’s a nerve issue?
It’s always best to speak with your GP or if under a coronary consultant, ask them for advice. You can never be too careful when you know you have heart disease.
Yes i will get this checked. Im not sure if it is nerve. I dont get any pains as such with it. I feel like its heart related. Like when im in deep sleep, hearts pumping slowly so maybe then. But at same time i did have a neck injury.years ago. Hmmm. I will speak to GP. Thanks
Thanks for your reply. Did your ICD shock you because of VT's? It's an urgent ablation as his VT's have recently resulted in several loss of consciousness. He's been told that he will be staying in overnight but hes not having a GA, they're doing it through the groin area & will numb him there I believe & it will take about 6hrs. That seems a long time to lie on your back & not move without some sort of sedation!
I don't have heart failure but regularly wake with pins and needles or numbness in either arm whether I've slept on it or not. it's caused by arthritis in my shoulders.
Thanks for the replies. Seems like a lot of us are going through the same symptoms. Points to heart and nerve problems. I will get this checked out. Fantastic support form this group. Thank you x
