Mild aortic stenosis

I was recently diagnosed following an echocardiogram. I will have a follow up echo in 3 years. The only medication I have is ramipril 2.5mg. I discovered my blood pressure was as high as it is now 5 years ago but the nurse only said it was a bit high and it wasn't pursued. What I'm wondering is if 3 years for follow up echo is soon enough? Did 5 years with raised blood pressure cause avoidable damage? Should I be on any other medication? Based on others experience with mild AS. Thanks 😊

I noted that my doctors classified my stenosis as mild then years later moderate then months later severe. At which time I needed a replacement valve. During the period between mild and moderate I had no reason to be concerned. I could get on with my life. I now have a new valve after the amazing AVR and six months of rehab.

Enjoy your life until your stenosis warrants a change.

I am not medically qualified hence my comments are just about me, in the hope it helps you

Thanks for your reply. Very glad you are doing well. What frequency were your echos during mild stage, if you don't mind me asking?

good morning Alvida

I had an annual scan. For six years.

The first scan was a check following a stroke. The fifth showed moderate stenosis. The sixth showed very urgent need for a new valve.

So for five years I enjoyed my life. Only when the sixth scan showed severe stenosis then the medical need took over my life.

I was bicuspid but didn’t know. I had an active life, being bicuspid didn’t affect me. Especially as I didn’t know !

Being mildly stenosed for five years didn’t affect me. Being moderate stenosed did affect me quite a lot. It was a dramatic crash in my fitness.

As I say, I am not medically trained so I can only tell you my experience.

best wishes

Sooty

Hi I have mild aortic stenosis picked up as I have a deformed aortic valve. It only has 2 flaps instead of 3 ,so less efficient.( bicuspid) This valve deformity was only picked up on investigations into my Atrial Fibrillation.I have had annual echoes since 2013. 2 years ago mild AS was noted . I feared the worst of course! However,I was told at my age ,63,that some stiffening of valves generally is not unusual, and particularly biscuspid ones.

I wouldn't worry overmuch

I'm 46, I'm not bicuspid, my AS is solely from damage. I'm determined to be proactive and get my heart as healthy as I can :) Thank you for the advice and I'm really glad you are doing well :)

I can't give you any advice, but three years between echoes seems too long to me.
