Happy hungry Christmas

I hope everyone has a lovely day. Unfortunately we had a power cut last night at 1am and another today at 12.45 just when most people had put their turkeys in. It came back 5 minutes ago. They obviously just reset a fuse during the night which didn't fix it. So no heating, lights, phones, TV or even hot drinks. Glad we decided to cook later. Keeping everything crossed that it stays on this time. Last week it was the water that went off for a full day. What's next? Oh I dropped a full bottle of my painkiller last night which will make me run short. Seems a fitting ending to a stinking year!

Hello :-)

They do make Christmas look so perfect on TV yet in so many households this is not the case as your post shows and I am sorry you have been having power cuts but fingers crossed it stays on and you will soon have your Christmas dinner

We have not eaten yet and I am on antibiotics and even though I will have my dinner I know because of the antibiotics where I will end up as they always upset my stomach and I have been feeling like you thinking something had to spoil it but no surprise

I will keep my fingers crossed that power stays on and despite everything I wish you a Happy Christmas and may 2023 be a better year for you 🎄:-) x

Thanks; just another hour would be good LOL. I think of those who are working to fix these faults, especially the water board last week who were out all night in minus 7. Just frustrating because we get so many power cuts.

Hello :-)

Yes so many have to work over Christmas I suppose they get used to it though and must celebrate in another way

My Son he has done the last 3 Christmas days but this year he has been at home so that has been nice :-)

Should be about 30 minutes as I write this reply before you will be enjoying that Christmas Turkey Dinner :-) x

I think these issues will only get worse as the current business model for utilities is wrong. Privatising them was just another Conservative mistake. They provide services that may become essential to maintain life. However the Labour public sector model fails as well as you end up with numerous individuals who do very little for a lot of money. You can see these people in councils and areas of the NHS on a daily basis! After the heatwave of 1976 the Labour Party wanted to build the equivalent of the National Grid for water. But then the Conservatives came into power and dropped it as they hadn't thought of it. We need the best brains from each side to work together to solve these problems instead of toeing the party line!

The whole infrstructure has been just allowed toget older and older with plasters over the faults rather than replacements and proper repairs. Even telephone. After we moved here our phones ( landline) were off for 3 months. BT refused to pay OPenreach to replace the whole cable so we kept getting moved from one dodgy cable to another; worked for a few h ours so they didn't have to pay compensation then went again. I'm housebound so I rely on online shopping for food; couldn't get online. Eventually someone went to the NW TV and surprise surprise, a whole new cable was laid within a week. It's all about doing the cheapest fix - no long term planning. Essential services ought to be nationalised. Look what happened to the railways! Absolute chaos.

There must be many reading these last posts, who have strong opinions about the reasons for this country's problems today.

I am resisting straying into political discussion, and i hope others will do the same.

Qualipop. You are clearly having a v difficult day. I do hope things improve soon in your area and you can get on with the important business of enjoying your Christmas!

Yes thanks; we managed to find a couple of hours when it stayed on. I'd just got the oven up to temperature when it went off again. Luckily it was a small turkey crown that didn't take long. Power finally stayed on around 4pm. It's the lack of maintenance and replacement of worn out systems that annoys me so much because it means people have to work through the holiday just to repair all the faults. When our water was off ( Not because of frozen pipes but worn out equipment) I couldn't stop thinking abut those poor men working through the night in minus 7 temperatures trying to dig ground that was frozen solid. So avoidable.

I hope Christmas dinner was eaten and you enjoyed it My appetite is rubbish at the moment and though I had a great day with family I ate very little of mine so wouldn't have missed it though I suppose the rest of family would have I think the stress when you are cooking too means when something goes wrong you feel awful I was at my sons so could just sit relax and be spoiled Hope you have power from now on and you enjoy the rest of the festive season

Touch wood, power's still on. There were only the two of us this year so it wouldn't have been a disaster but I really don't like meat except turkey which I love so I would have been really disappointed for it to be ruined. I'm just relieved we have heating again.
