My daughter after having a heart attack in the summer, she is going through the Menapause and because of experiencing very, very heavy periods possibly because of medication has now been perscribed a coil to be fitted to control this!! Is this a usual proceedure?

Hello :-)

I am sorry to hear about your Daughter and hope her recovery is going well in every other way :-)

It will be the blood thinners no doubt causing this and I had my first heart attack at 58 and in a way was glad I had an hysterectomy at 40 as when I was on those blood thinners I would have dreadful nose bleeds which I had to have my nose cauterised 3 times !

I often thought what it might be like if I still had periods at that stage and glad I wasn't any more

I would say as long as they have made sure nothing else is causing her heavy periods which is doubtful it will be having a coil fitted would be the way to go to try and ease them for her :-) x

Coils have changed so much over the years, that I'm sure all we remember about them will be outdated now. I had a coil briefly in my 30's and couldn't stand the heavy periods it gave me, but then I remember many years ago my daughter talking about a coil with hormones, think it was called the Mirena. Google and it will tell you all about it.

Sounds usual to me. I was given a D & C and fitted with the Mirena coil during the menopause due to really heavy periods as were many of my friends. It worked really well for us and hope it does for your daughter.

my 47 yr old daughter has pcos and had very heavy periods all her life until a consultation -video in 2020 with a specialist suggested spironolactone and the Mirena coil-she hasn’t looked back! So much less pain and loss allowing her to be almost normal! Go for it!

I had heavy periods and had a Merina coil. Sometimes a body can reject them. I had very heavy bleeding about 2 weeks after I'd had it in. The consultant thought my body had rejected it so put another one in.(very painful) 7 years later when I came to have it removed I had two inside me! On the plus side I never had any more bleeding and now I have gone through menopause without any issues. I'm 56 now. Sounds like the best thing for your daughter to me but if she does bleed after she's had it inserted please make sure she has a scan before they put another one in!

I suffered from extremely heavy periods when I was diagnosed with unstable angina at the age of 45 and having a double bypass a year later. I had the Mirena coil fitted whic helped but then I went on to be diagnosed with a large fibroid and had a hysteroscopy, curettage and change of Mirena coil 9 years later at the age of 54 and reached the menopause after that. It doesn’t seem fair that you have to experience period problems and cardiology problems!

I have now come through the other side.

I hope your daughter gets relief from having a coil fitted but create a nuisance of herself if it doesn’t work.

I had the coil fitted when I went on to warfarin (blood thinner), as heavy periods and alot of blood loss. So much better aferwards and not so anxious everyime I went out or did activities. It can stay in situ for 5/6 years. When I had mine removed I had stopped and was in full menopause. You don't know they are there, just a little uncomfortable when removing, but my GP did a smear at the same time as removal, so not so bad. During this time I had a mechanical AVR and although I mentioned it a few times, it wasn't an issue. Nothing to be worried about. It may take a couple of days to "bed in" but never had any issues. Good luck to your daughter. I had my HA and AVR at 53. My only wish was that my mum was there and I did miss her, but have the most fantastic hubby 😁

I had the Mirena coil and it was the best thing iv done. It stopped all the heavy bleeding and clots, in fact I didnt get monthlies at all after the first couple of months.

I have also had a good experience of the mirena coil. No more heavy periods. Even when taking clopidogrel, a common antiplatelet medication often prescribed post heart attack.

Hi.I had my heart attack at 43 and had to come off the pill which i used to stop my period coming.

Fast forward few months and period came back with a vengence! I called it the red sea. Dr said it was probably due to the ticagralor anti platelet medication. This is usually prescribed for one year. I ended up back on the pill and taking a double dose of it every day! It eventually stopped and after stoppi g the ticagralor i no longer bruise like an apple lol

The coil was suggested but i was never keen on it though it will work.

Good luck to your daughter. Julie x

sorry to hear of her struggles. I imagine the coul is one that may contain synthetic hormone in order to get some regularity and even possibly stop the troublesome periods. It didn’t work for me regarding bleeding and also strange that as an internal device it worsened my existing migraines. At first they weren’t convinced re the migraines but after 7 months of none stop bleed it hadn’t done its job so agreed to remove it - Voila in a few days no migraines!!

I went on Cerrazette - a mini pill which stopped the bleeds and took away pain. Obviously I have no idea if this is suitable for her. Hope she gets success

Hi, I had my heart attack when I was 54 ( 4 years ago) and had always suffered heavy periods. I was not menopausal. So when I was put on Clopidogrel and aspirin it was very frightening.

I posted on BHF for help and suggestions like you. You can read my post and progress/options by tapping on my “ name photo”. Luckily for me I got help very quickly. My womb ablation was a success and I’ve still not gone menopausal so it’s saved a lot of distress and anemia.

I hope your daughter finds something that works for her and allows her to get away from the bathroom 🥴
