Leg Question after CABG

Hello

Just a question on how people's leg wound has behaved after Vein removal for use in the bypass op.

After 7 years mine has started to play up with a little pain around my ankle well more than a little pain really! My Dr has asked for a doppler test to see what's going on as I have also just developed some soft Varicose veins and she wants me to have a look at me wearing the elastic stockings. Just wondering has anyone else experienced this ???

Regards

Hello to you,

Well as you know my op was not as long ago as yours but my leg that they harvested from still aches around the wound sites and down to my ankle.

I had the "keyhole" type harvesting { bloody big keys } if this makes any difference and was told that they damage nerves etc when they pulled the vein {s} out.

I also have noticeable varicose vein which I never had before, but they don't seem to worry the Dr much { days of hot pants are over ! }

I have a weaker pulse by my ankle which they say is part of this.

Hope any of the above helps

as ever

Hi Frank,

Sorry I cannot find my leg to check! 😁 Joking apart I think it is unlikely there is a link. A friend, a keen cyclist, had a triple a dozen or so years ago. It was nearly a year before his leg scars allowed him to cycle again and he is still a keen cyclist. As a sufferer of PAD (peripheral arterial disease) I would not advise you to wear support stockings until you have the results of the Doppler as if your ABPI (ankle-brachial pressure index) is reduced it means narrowing of the arteries. Support stockings would then increase the risk of a clot and leg attack which could result in the loss of the leg! You are particularly at risk if you are diabetic or have ever smoked. The fact you have had a bypass and stents also increases the risk.

Cheers, Michael

Thanks Michael lol

I have the doppler booked for the 7th November so I should know quite soon what's causing this discomfort !

That's great Frank. Make sure they do the full ABPI as a DSN (Diabetes Specialist Nurse) said my pulses were fine six weeks before I was diagnosed with PAD! 🙁
