Does any one with heart failure are advised with fluid restrictions of 1.5 to 2 litres per day ? if so how can we prevent kidney stones. Urologists mention that to avoid kidney stones we need to take at least 3 liters of water per day.

Heart Failure - Fluid restrictions
Hello
It is true to restrict your fluids with a heart condition and looking after the heart I think comes first
From 2 litres of fluid to 3 is only 1 litre difference which is not an awful lot so hopefully kidney stones will not become an issue but if they were to they are a lot easier to deal with than the heart
Another way to try and prevent Kidney stones is your diet cut down on high-purine foods such as red meat, organ meats, and shellfish, and follow a healthy diet that contains mostly vegetables and fruits, whole grains, and low fat dairy products this will also be good for your heart
Talk to your Doctors again about this when you next have a consultation and they will be able to give you more advice x
2 litres a day is plenty except in very hot weather, or if you are very active.
Hi Seena, wow, 3 litres; that's a lot of water to consume daily!
Please bear in mind I'm not a doctor or medically trained at all.
Here are some kidney stone prevention/treatment suggestions for you to think about especially if 3 litres of water prove a bit difficult to manage:
* Adding a slice or two of fresh lemon or a few drops of fresh lemon juice to drinking water can help avoid/break down calcium-based kidney stones and keep bacteria at bay as well. Lemon water is reckoned to be safe as long as you're OK with lemon juice.
* To help break down uric acid stones, I've read that for a short period only, basil tea (the herb basil) can be helpful, but only take for 2/3 weeks if consumed daily, then stop. The tea can have certain undesirable effects if taken over too long a period of time. To prevent uric acid stones, a drink of basil tea once or twice a week might be effective, but you should speak with your doctor or pharmacist first to make sure a basil preparation is safe for you.
* The juice of cooked kidney beans is thought to help flush out toxins that cause kidney stones and is reckoned to be safe to drink daily.
I've read about other foods preparations thought to help with kidney stones, but these carry a risk of adverse side effects that could be particularly unhelpful if there's already a heart problem.
Be cautious when making dietary changes. I think it wise for you to check with your doctor before trying anything I've suggested given your heart condition/medication.
We went through a phase where absurd amounts of liquid were supposed to be essential and even walkers started carrying a water bottle.
Up to 2 litres is surely considered the right amount as some 20% of our fluid comes from our diet.
In case of extreme exercise and hot weather that may need to be adjusted.
I was told to restrict to 1.5ltrs a day back in March 2014. Used to go under the next day if over the previous day. No problem with kidney stones but did end up with gout in 2018. Not sure if due to liquid restoration or one or more of the 4 tablets that can cause it. Though would have been better if advised this could happen as left it 6-9 before making an appointment for it as thought perhaps twisting my big toes on a regular basis.
There is a significant genetic component to stone formation.
If you have had one before and had it analysed for the composition, there are dietary modifications that can be taken to minimise new stones forming.
Hi Seena2019, I put the same question to my cardiologist as I have a small but annoying kidney stone. He replied that, in general, kidney stones are unpleasant but don’t kill. Overloading with fluid can kill.
I’m not good at sticking to the daily 1.5 litres he recommended, I’ve found that it’s not good to dehydrate in warm weather. However, by being sensitive to how I feel, I can regulate my intake. Have managed ok for the past year.
Take care, all the best, David.

I was told earlier this year to get my fluid intake up to 2 litres per day. When I explained I often had up to 3 lites I was told that was fine but absolutely no more than 3. With not being in the office (still recuperating at home) I'm not drinking as much so it actually tends to be 2.25 or 2.5 at the moment. And still being on water tablets helps but as I cut those down I will need to keep an eye on the fluid intake.
yes I have also been put on fluid restriction to 2000mls per day , I'm finding it hard because I'm also on 80mg fruesimide , I have to have a blood test in 4 wks to see how my kidneys are coping
I had no idea I was retaining fluid , rushed to hospital with heart event , in 4 weeks and one day I lost 75 kilos in weight , apparently My kidneys just do not work well enough , when I asked my local doc, why he had never mentioned fluid retention , she replied …” your ankles were not swollen “
I feel great now but stick to my 1.5 litres and after 4 yrs not put on a kilo.
