I’ve felt very sick for almost a year. I’ve spoken to all the doctors and nurses that I see but to no aviail. I’m taking the usual meds. I’ve tried coming off dilator and amidorone it hasn’t helped. Anybody any idea what’s causing you it. I’m getting very depressed about it

I would ask them to be referred to gastroenterology.

Dear Finnbo2008

You have to push to find the answers to your problems as it is totally unacceptable to be feeling ill all the time.

It certainly could be your medication of which all of it can be replaced by a similar product that hopefully will not make you feel so bad, but still do its job.

Mine was the humble aspirin , even at very low dose it gave me the tummy flutters { sure there is a more technical name } once changed for another drug that dreadful feeling went.

Talk again to your medical people and ask for this to be investigated, it may take time to find the culprit { if it is the drugs }

Take care

You could say "been there, done that, got the tee shirt". I've had colonoscopy, various scans and been referred by the gastroenterology consultant to a dietician. Unfortunately, no-one can say when I will see the dietician, but I am thinking that is where the answer lies. I wish you luck. Try, as I am, experiment yourself.

Spent a long time like that myself a few years ago. It turned out that I had gall stones which had been discounted because they didn’t show up on an ordinary ultra sound scan. When it was finally treated the surgeon said my call bladder looked like it was full of fine sand. Because I have severe psoriatic arthritis and take a bucket load of stuff my symptoms were dismissed as either the disease or side effects of medications. I have the opinion that specialists often know a great deal about their own particular fields but bugger all about anything else and that they don’t communicate with each other very well. Nowadays we don’t have many generalists and GPs are often little more than a referral service. We are allowed to have more than one thing wrong with us but getting two specialist departments to coordinate treatment is almost impossible.

How true about generalists and GPs and specialists. I have seen 3 cardiologists over the last 2 years about symptoms following my heart attack, and they basically say that the symptoms are not cardiac related.

My question of you is "how were the gallstones diagnosed if they did not show up on ultrasound?" I have been down what sounds the same route, and because the ultrasound was negative, (or there were 2 tiny stones which had been there for over 6 years and not increased in size) it was deemed not relevant to me feeling sick all the time.

Cardiologists say I'm wasting their time and that includes one I have paid for recently. They are probably right. GPs also think I am wasting their time which is not so good.

it might be that you need to see your GP and be firm about how much this is affecting you

"feeling a bit sick" does not really ring many bells for a busy GP, but clear statements about how long this has been going on, how it affects your dietary intake and day-to-day life, what you have tried to resolve it etc, should show that you are serious and want help and referral to someone who can help

e.g. are you losing/gaining weight or have you changed what and when you eat to cope with the nausea - is it constant or does it come on after food or other stimuli? does the smell of food/cooking make you worse? have you stopped going out/going to certain places because it makes you worse? do you vomit because of the nausea? any other symtoms?

have you asked a pharmacist about nausea being a side effect of the medications you take?

i hope you get help with resolving this soon - thanks to a spell of "morning sickness" i learned what constant nausea is like and i never want to go back there!

I found taking fish oils made me nauseous. You know that feeling where you produce too much saliva and think you might be going to vomit but you don't get to that point. I asked on a health website I am a member of and the consensus was that it could be the fish oils. I stopped them and hey presto the symptoms went away after a week or so. So, agree with all the others you need to push to find out what is causing this. It could be your meds.

Hello Finnbo2008, I suffered very badly for about 8 months following my heart bypass surgery. The nausea was there 24/7 pretty much. My only respite was when I was able to sleep. I didn’t eat and really struggled to do most daily activities. In the end I was in hospital as I was so frail. I had numerous tests and nothing was discovered. In the end it was a combination of changing some of my medication and also chronic anxiety. I am now much better although it still happens some days but at least I am eating better and doing some of the things I enjoy.

I do so hope you get sorted it is very debilitating. Let us know how you get on. Take care, Judi
