Husband in constant AF

Hi this is my first post sorry its long! My husband has a couple of weeks ago been diagnosed with AF he is 44. He had a bad attack of being really breathless and heavy chested and it really scared us both, he refused an ambulance but know now thats what we should have done. He attended GP on the Monday after 48 hours to be hooked up to ecg and told his heart rate was too fast and he was in af. He was prescribed bisproprol 2.5g has been back since heart rate reduced but still in AF. Didnt score high enough for anticoagulant. Bloods seem to be ok in all the desired areas although low in phosphorus, no thyroid or cholesterol issues. He is now on waiting list for cardiology and has and appointment for echocardiogram in 5 weeks. It just all feels a little scary that its just ok to be left as it is.

We don't know how long it has been like it but he had surgery in July 2020 (not heart)and no mention of it then.in January 2021 we both had covid pretty bad and since then he hasnt been right, more lethargic, breathless and cant suck enough air in. In his words. We thought he may have long covid but after the worsening we think maybe it was the AF and not long covid. His father who is 72 has AF, Dr says at his age unusual so needs to be investigated. We can definitely do some work on diet alcohol, and gentle exercise, but dont think any of these seem to be cause? Guess we just have to wait, have any of you in persistent af found out why, particularly at young age?

Thank you.
