6 month study for use of stent or placebo effect

just had angiography yesterday and have 1 completely blocked artery. Doc wants me to be part of six month study to see whether having a stent is better than just relying on meds I could have Stent or be part of placebo group obviously won't know until end of trial.. At the moment meds increased to 60 mg nucleotide monohydrate and been put on 5 mg of amlodipine as well as statins and 75mg of aspirin. Wondered if anyone else has been asked to take part in this. My end is Basildon cardiothoratic centre in conjunction with Imperial college.

Hello :-)

This sounds very intriguing and even though I have never been in this position I have read posts on here where others have been asked to take part in different trails

How do you feel about it ?

If you do take part I hope eventually you will let us know how you got on :-) x

I am going to take part. Have been told it's a 6 to 7 month wait to have a stent put in for a totally blocked artery as it's more complicated to do. If I do the trial there is a 50/50 chance of getting the stent so have nothing to loose. Just have to report every day, via smart phone app whether have any angina symptoms. Things getting underway Monday with stress echo.

If it doesn't help me it might help docs in the future to understand whether doing stents are best way forward.

I've seen quite a few medical publications questioning the benefits of stenting unless performed during a heart attack.

I guess the big upside to the trial is that you will be monitored very closely, instead of being stented/or not and then immediately discharged with very little/no follow up.

In your shoes I might question who is funding the study though.

As far as I know it's in conjuction with imperial college London. Dr Khan who is doing a fellowship at Basildon is my contact. I was impressed with him yesterday and have spoken to him today as he asked me to report blood pressure today as my cardiologist has increased meds (which can decrease blood pressure). At least, as you say don't have to wait months for follow up appointment which would be at Broomfield which is my local hospital.

Here are some further details of the trial.

It is being sponsored by Imperial College.

The Principal Investigator is a very well respected researcher.

I applaude anybody taking part in research that will help other patients in the future.

i was asked to take part in this trial after an angiogram showed 80% blockage in Lad .After a lot of consideration i decided not to take part as if it turned out to be the placebo i didnt want to go through the whole procedure twice. Had i opted for the trial i would have had it done in May , my angio was February .The result is i am still waiting for the stent with an appt just to be seen in October !!

Agree that's the downside. Did think hard about the fact I might have to have procedure twice but decided to take risk

Well done annpavitt250448 (is that your phone number 😂), without people like you there wouldn't be so many advances in medical treatments. I would take part in any trial available, I'm sure that during the trial you will receive much better care than you would have had, had there been no ttial available. I wish you well 👏👏👏

No it's not my phone number. A bit apprehensive about it but it's mostly reporting in via app every day any angina symptoms. They do take you off meds for a while , but do reintroduce them if angina symptoms return.

I would take part in that trial. Stent vs meds is the billion euros/pounds/dollar question in cardiology right now. I had a stent with 90% LAD but then had a HA 9 months later anyway. Different artery. I felt fine with that 90% blockage, no angina etc. So it's a real crap shoot for stents if you're not having a HA or other event, I think.

The study should be safe as you'll be monitored daily, which is more than you would be if you were waiting for a stent, right?
