Life insurance after valve repair

I'm just about to turn 41 and had a mitral valve repair in January 2015, and then a re-repair in November 2017. Unfortunately I never had any form of health or life insurance before that.

Since the second surgery I've been fine, and all follow up scans have confirmed my heart is now working almost normally and is healthy, and I am fit and active, go to the gym every day.

Back in September 2017 me and my partner bought a property, and as part of getting the mortgage we had to apply for life insurance. In the end we could get the mortgage without insurance, but the we got some pretty insane quotes at the time (£120-150/month each) and even when we tried to get one of them (I think it was with Royal London) we were refused once we applied after the quote. Obviously at the time my circumstance was slightly different as I had to declare that I was waiting for a surgery. I knew I'd be refused but the mortgage broker insisted they could get something!

Anyway, now it's been almost 5 years since the surgery and I'm fine, I think I could even get a letter from my cardiologist just confirming my current situation if I needed one. But I want to know if anyone has had a similar experience and been able to get any cover?

What would be the best route? Are there any online ones that might give it? I was thinking of something like Vitality, or Beagle Street. I saw that on GoCompare I could search for insurance for pre-existing conditions, but not sure how accurate that would be.

I know applying and getting rejected can affect your chances in the future so I just wondered if anyone here had any experiences they could share so I could get an idea of the best way forward before I dive in and mess it up for myself :).

Appreciate any replies, thanks.

Hello and welcome to the forum!

As a lifelong Type 1 diabetic I know how difficult all forms of insurance can be. I have only had life cover on one occasion and fortunately it was not loaded. It was an endowment policy that although it did not pay out fully at the end of term it did cover me. When it expired the company had been taken over by Prudential about ten years earlier and there was only trivial growth thereafter.

I suggest you contact these people as I know they are good for Type 1 and Type 2 diabetics so should be good for hearties. Let us know how you get on.

Just had a call from life insurance scammers. They declined to quote because I led them along. I think the heavy smoking and drinking were an issue. In fact I haven't smoked since 1975 or drunk any alcohol for over two years because it doesn't mix with Gabapentin!

I like it Michael, I will have to remember it for next time a scammer calls! :)
