waiting cardiology appointment

just wondered how long others have had to wait for a cardiology appointment?

I was referred last November. In February I was worrying so paid to see someone. Had a CT which showed slight cardiovascular disease in 2 arteries (calcium 16, im female and 67 yrs old).

I can’t afford to continue privately and each time I ring re nhs referral I get told told it will be further away. Told today it won’t be before October. Is this typical?

Dear Plas

I was blissfully unaware that my heart disease was imminent and terminal. What I can tell you is that the NHS moved fast. In fact the consultant rang me from her home, on a Saturday.

I needed a new valve and that’s what I got.

So please do not get wound up. When you need the op then you will get it. If you were to have the ops earlier then it will bring things forward and we could do without that. Also, you would be the first to have your op postponed and that would be bad news.

I was at the stage of being exhausted 22 hours each day. Ignorance was bliss !

My op was observed and the observers confirmed I was just a couple of weeks from my heart giving up the ghost.

Waiting is undoubtedly the worst bit. By far the worst bit.

Continue to be brave. Things will fall in to place at the right time.

Hello :-)

Blackcatsooty is right you will get that appointment and if they felt you were in danger you would get it a lot sooner

Again it is so true the waiting is the worst but stay strong

The only other thing I could suggest or think of is if you are free and can do short notice asking if they can put a note on your records if there are any cancellations before Oct you would be available if they could bear that in mind

Keep talking to us for support while you are waiting and when you do get your appointment would be lovely to hear how you got on :-) x

Ring the hospital, ask to speak to the cardiologist secretary. Even if you don’t get given a date you’ll find out how long the wait is. Find out how you can get on a cancellation list. Works for me.

Not heard anything since my scan back in February, as I feel reasonably well and getting along I take it no news is Ok news.

Would have been nice to see how my % (heart failure) has improved with the meds/exercise/diet etc, however there are more folks with more pressing problems than me.

I had a ct scan in October last year and was referred as problems with my aortic valve , I had another scan 2 months ago and have got appointment come through to see cardio surgeons middle of august,

So has taken quite a while took them 6 weeks to look at the last scan results I know they really backed up in South Yorkshire which doesn’t help with me worrying

Always worth letting them know that you can attend at short notice. Husband was called yesterday to offer him a CT scan the following day ( obviously from a cancellation!!), but we are in France atm!!

I was referred in February and I’ve been told the wait is one year. Crazy., but typical I think.

Hi. I waited over a year for an echo but then a couple of weeks later I saw the cardiologist when they realised how severe my mitral valve regurgitation was. I was in theatre a few months later on a priority list. If it’s urgent they dont usually hang around.

As others have said, I would encourage you to get to know the cardiologists secretary. I emailed and rang quite a bit and she was incredibly helpful. I’m not saying that you can jump the queue but they might contact you for cancellation appointments and keep you up to date with the waiting list. Good luck.
