Just thought I’d give a little update!
So I’d had a stent fitted to relieve a 90% blockage in my LAD artery in November 2021. I was therefore started on Prasugrel (antiplatelet med) in addition to the 75mg daily aspirin I was already taking. They then found I have a moderately leaky aortic valve.
Being a 44yr old female at the time of the stent, still very much having regular menstrual cycles.
Safe to say my time of the month since has been horrific! Try visualising the Texas Chainsaw Massacre!!!!!
In any case, I chalked it up by losing my dignity (having to wear Tenna pants) for the better good! It’s what we have to do right? Lol!
However over time I began to feel more fatigued, dizzy and overall pretty crappy.
Unbeknown to me, being on the Prasugrel was gradually and over the months made me anaemic.
Was in A&E week before last as it was felt I may have needed an iron infusion. Blood level was 83. 80 or less, an iron infusion would have been mandatory. Was flying to Spain the following evening so they decided to not do the infusion, but started Ferrous Fumerate tablets instead. Advice from Cardiologist was to stop the Prasugrel immediately.
I was worried about blood clots forming around the stent (there’s a reason they put you on antiplatelet meds for a year post stent right?) but was told I was at a greater risk of having cardiac issues from the anaemia than from the stent. Risk/benefit meant the antiplatelet Med had to be stopped after six months.
I was given permission to go away on the holiday. Dizziness reducing. Fatigue still there. I understand it can take many weeks of being on iron tablets before you notice an improvement.
Have had a menstrual cycle since. Barely bled. So chuffed to have chucked those awful paper knickers in the bin!!!!
Just thought I’d post about this…..not sure how commonplace it is for the antiplatelet meds causing anaemia. Something for you all to just consider.
Great news, have bought a treadmill from Facebook marketplace and walked for 30mins this afternoon. I hope to walk for 30mins every day, if that’s possible. If not right now, something to work towards.
Hope you’re all doing well? Take care my cardiac buddies, Sal 🥰
