Hiatus hernia

I have just had my angiogram results and they were fine but did show a big hiatus hernia ! would this have any connection with the palpitations Iam getting ?

I have a small hiatus hernia and it is accepted the pressure of it contributes to my heart palpitations and ectopics when it raises its head on many occasions.

Hello meadfoot, Firstly is your hiatus hernia confirmed by a barium swallow. Apart from ectopic, do you suffer from heart burn, indigestion etc. As far as my knowledge goes hiatus hernia means a patch of stomach slides or slips into the weakness of diaphragm muscle and sits inside the thorax where it should not be. I do not think there is any direct connection between hiatus hernia and palpitations. It would be good idea to run some more cardiac tests.

Thanks Iam having a MRI scan at Harefield in June so hopefully I will know more. I do take medication for my heartburn and did have the barium swallow a few years ago

I have had every gastric and cardiac test in the book with two of the top cardiologists and gastroenterologists in the UK in central London, both working in tandem to assess my health issues. I have absolute confidence in their care and expertise. Hope you remain ok.

Hi I have a large hiatus hernia also I've had it for many years which gives me acid reflux. I had a heart attack 20 years ago but have not experienced and palpitations whatsoever I hope you can find your answer

I have a hiatus hernia for the last 30 yrs and when it plays up i get burning chest pain, belching and palpitations. I relieve this with an omeprazole.

I had 'acid reflux' for many years, then 15 years ago it got really bad and after an endoscopy was put on Nexium and have been on a PPI ever since (although the PPI was changed to Lansoprazole when I was prescribed Clopidogrel following a HA 4 years ago). Just over two months ago after A&E visits with chest discomfort I was told I had angina. However since then I seem to have slowly developed all the symptoms of a hiatus hernia, less the chest discomfort which has now all but gone. So the symptoms are very similar, and my 'angina' is more than likely a hiatus hernia, and that may be the case for others too.

Finally, anyone who experiences 'acid reflux' on a continued basis should get themselves checked out by a health professional, and not just suffer simply treating it with over the counter antacids. The condition can be calmed by PPIs, but if the oesophagus continues to be washed by very acidic stomach reflux , its cell walls can change, resulting in Barrett's Oesophagus (check it out) or worse Oesophageal Cancer.
