My GP recently decided to discontinue my beta-blocker from 2 x 2.5 bisoprolol and take 1 x 50mg sotalol instead. (This decision was following an ICD firing)
I had been taking the bisoprolol for the last ten years and monitoring my BP with a cuff device, where my BP had always shown a borderline normal / pre-high reading. (about 120/78)
Since changing to sotalol my readings now show borderline pre-high / high BP. (140/90)
Is this normal for an 83 yr old, and should I be concerned? Has anyone else found raised BP after taking sotalol?
I would advise your GP about the increase in your blood pressure since the change of medication. There may be a different medication that is as effective as Bisoprolol without the effects that it apparently caused.
As to whether 140/90 is acceptable for a person of your age.... well how long is a piece of string? I was told that 140/90 was fine when I was 57, but unacceptable when I changed my GP a year later. 120/78 certainly is better whatever age you are! I normally present around 125/75 and that's after stents and a triple bypass.
Hi Vespaman I used to take 5mg of Bisoprolol to control blood pressure, my cardiologist change this to 80mg of Sotalol twice a day to control A.F and blood pressure. Initially it didn’t work for me so doseage was increased to 160mg twice a day, this has controlled A.F episodes also blood pressure. So maybe your starter dose isn’t correct yet maybe another chat with g.p.Good luck.
