Mild Myocarditis

Hi. My son has just had 2 weeks in hospital with a virus and during this time developed mild viral myocarditis. He has been told to rest for 2 weeks and to contact a GP if symptoms worsen. 2 weeks ago he was a fit and healthy athlete and university student and now he's very concerned that he will attend university/exercise for many weeks. Are there any other young lads who have been through the same thing? Thanks very much

Hello. There really does seem to be very little information or support on this condition. My son was just told to rest and also hasn't been given any follow up scans. When you say scan, do you mean MRI? Thanks

Hello... he had another ultrasound a few weeks after being discharged from the Coronary Care Unit. It has come back normal, but he still has heaviness I called the ward, where he was for 3 days today, and they were able to give me results without waiting a month. They were so very helpful and explained that whilst a normal scan, his muscle is still inflamed, which means no strenuous exercises just a gradual build up ie walking daily until it dissipates... they advised me to speak with GP for more advice if needed. I hope this helps you and your son

Hello, thank you, that's really kind of you to reply. It sounds like the same situation for my son then. Whereas I believe his heart function is normal, his heart is still inflamed and will just take time. There really is so little info/advice on Myocarditis so your info. is much appreciated. All the best, Janet

My fit and healthy 21 son in law is having exactly the same experience. He had first problem at end of January and was taken to a&e, he's been in and out of a&e almost weekly since, seeing different doctors each time. Has not been seen by the cardiologist. He's on anti inflamatories, and pain killers. But his troponin was at 49 on Sunday, but they sent him home anyway. They now say he's got myocarditis and pericarditis, although he's not sure if this diagnosis is correct as not given by cardiologist but doctors in a&e. He now finally has MRI appointment for 17th May. I want him to get referral from gp to a cardiologist, but finding it almost impossible to get a gp appointment.

Very worried!!

Can anyone recommend a good cardiologist in South East please?

Hi, I'm 44 and had myocarditis/pericarditis with 2 trips to a&e, tropolin hit 5000....Southampton hospital have been good... cardiology specialists. however it's not a quick fix..I'm on colchicine and been recovering since Feb. Im Doing more walking recently (short & slow)but it's so easy to over do it as you don't feel bad at time of walking it's later or in the evening when hurts...I'm finding it's 2 steps forward 1 step back. Basically slow, rest, don't do too much, mri will help give clarity ..but will probably just confirm inflammation and scaring...in mycase got my mri results 2 weeks ago ..just extended colchicine until September...can be frustrating when normally very sporty..hope son in law keeps improving..
