Nicorandil 10mg + Microvascular Angina & Vasospastic.

Hi Folks

Looking for a little help here.

I am 18 months post MI non stemmi 2 stents a ruptured stump ! 3 blockages. 95% & 85% LAd & Circ. Third blockage not stented. Felt 100% before the heart attack, since I am crippled with pain. I have been back in and had another angiogram and there is narrowing either side of the two stents. It looks like I have both microvascular angina and Vasospastic angina. I cannot walk 100ft, gtn makes no difference. I feel desperate.

I have been invited to take part in Prof Colin Berry's trials at the GoldenJubilee, but they are not sure I will fit in the scanner or can have the dye due to my asthma. So to my question........................I am on such a concoction of drugs and it has been added to again. These trials are being sponsored by the BHF.

I already am on asthma medication, 2 inhalers. DVT lifelong heparin injections. I am diabetic and on 180mg Gliclazide x 4 plus alogliptin. I take Bisoprolol 1.25 which was doubled last week. Candesartan 4mg. It was 8mg but its been reduced. A few other meds I wont bore you with, Gtn. and Ezetimibe which makes me so violently ill I have stopped taking it. I cannot tolerate any statin. In fact when they insisted I took 80mg of Atorvastatin I have a severe reaction in the ward and had to have a steroid and an anti H injection.

So now, to start on Nicarandil Another new med but I have been reading about the side effects. Have any of you been on this med ?? how are you getting on ?? Every day feels so hopeless with yet more meds.

Anyone else out there got both Micro vascular & Vasospastic angina ? how is your pain levels ? can you walk far ? How were you diagnosed ?

I've been taking Nicorandil 10mg twice a day for a few years along with a variety of other meds for microvascular, type 2 diabetes and high BP.As far as I can remember, I had a bit of a headache for a couple of weeks, but I started on several meds all at the same time, so it was probably a combination and worked through it.

I don't get any probs with any except statins, which I changed until I found one that didn't give me severe leg pains.

Even bisoprolol 2.5mg, which it seems a lot of people have probs with are OK for me.

As for having MVD diagnosed 😂 when I find a cardiologist who believes it exists...... Whereas, the doctor I had at the time told me that's what it was after my angiogram, but that doesn't count apparently.

Prof Colin Berry is a leading BHF funded researcher into microvascular dysfunction and vasospastic angina.

He is the Principal Investigator of a study into a possible treatment for microvascular angina, which is being carried out in several centres.

There is also a trial taking place into the diagnosis of microvascular angina at St Thomas's hospital in London.

Perhaps ask your Cardiologist to make contact with the researchers running these trials.

My cardiologist was extremely dismissive of the condition and suggested I suffered with indigestion.There was no talking to him, he knew it all.

Even though I hinted at the research going on, he'd have none of it.

Funnily enough, even though I've been hospitalised a couple of times because of it, not one cardiologist will confirm it, but none will stop my meds either so I just live with it.

Time for a second opinion.

I have a confirmed diagnosis, so I always ask any oncall Cardiologist who is unsure to look at my angiogram with acetylcholine results.

I must admit I should try again, but I've got something else going on atm which takes priority. But when that's sorted have another go.And thanks for the info, I've not heard of it before.

That is heartbreaking, no pun intended. I have been fighting for an appointment for 17 months.

Unfortunately, my OH's health is such that she needs full time care and as a consequence, mine has taken a back seat.But now, I need to get checked out for a new problem.

My doctor has been very supportive lately (which isn't like her🙂)

Professor Colin Berry has invited me to take part in these trials. The only problem is my weight, I may not fit in the scanner and my asthma. It is at the QE II in Glasgow. My cardiologist put me forward for it and I was invited the day before yesterday. Fingers crossed. I think it was yourself who first suggested this xxx

I too have asthma had a stent and have Crohn’s and diagnosed with micro vascular angina just go with milkfairy she’s ace knows what she is talking about 🙂

Like Milkfairy, I have been through all the tests and have confirmed MVA. I thank my lucky stars that my stay in CCU at Hairmyers Hospital and the immediate referral to Golden Jubilee Hospital enabled a firm diagnosis. It took a while to get my meds right but it was worth it and, with low cholesterol diet and gentle exercise I now feel more like myself. I am part of the clinical trials at Golden Jubilee with Professor Berry. Please push for a referral Sootycat. It could change your troubled wellbeing. This site is wonderful support too. I had MI and cardiac arrest in 2017 and recovered well. In 2020 I started having Unstable Angina attacks. Amlodipine and Isosorbide Mononitrate added to my medication to no avail. Ranolazine made no difference and made my dizziness worse. Angio found narrowing between two stents in LAD, subsequent pressure wire angio aborted when clot caused further heart attack in cath lab. Subsequent PET scan reported blood flows in heart normal. Doctors call it refractory angina (i.e existing after treatment) and no further intervention proposed. Consultant started me on 10mg Nicorandil morning and night and it made a huge difference. After three months increased to 20mg. It has given me my life back! I don't appear to have any side effects, but having read the information leaflet I can understand your concern.

I’m on Nicorandil 20mg twice a day without any problems. I’ve also been accepted on a trial but in Aberdeen. So far my cardiologist has been having issues getting acetylcholine and it’s has been ongoing since at least last August! Hopefully you’ll have more luck in Glasgow and have your appointment soon.
