Liver function test
Your bio mentions painkillers. Some an affect the liver. What medication are you on currently, both prescribed and non prescribed?
Could you have fatty liver disease?
My lft's were only deranged after heart attacks and quickly settled down to normal. I take dihydrocodeine during flare ups if back pain. The doctor discounted this as a reason in for elevated lft's. A further blood test is to be taken at the end of March just to make sure the levels are still ok.. I read that sometimes the liver can go into shock after a heart attack. Thanks for your suggestion.
Hi no-peep. My LFT results were completely deranged a year after ha and 2 stents. After a lot of toing and froing to the GP is seems atorvastatin was to blame. I now take 2 alternative types of statin and liver results returned to normal. As prada47 and MichaelJH suggest, it is quite likely medication related. Speak to your GP for a meds review.
Thanks for taking the time to comment. I wasn't on any statins due to low cholesterol readings. I was on thyroxine after a thyroidectomy because of cancer. Only other health complaints were due to thorraccic fractures & other back damage. I wa very fortunate to have always been healthy. My husband and I ran swam cycked walkef and did not drknk. So a mystery. Dic is keeping an eye on it. Thanks again for your interest
As per Michael’s reply, but it’s also worth pointing out that although referred to as liver enzymes, ALT and AST etc. are not actually liver specific. They can be elevated as a result of problems involving other parts of the body, including muscle. Given that the heart is a muscle, my understanding is that it’s possible it may be to do with that rather than your liver.
I have heard of cases where heart attack/open heart surgery has resulted in the need for temporary dialysis because of the trauma.
Can’t comment to that, partly because I haven’t looked into the enzymes in relation to the kidneys (yet! 😁), but having got the child to school, I double checked my facts to be sure: elevated ALT and AST are indeed common after a heart attack, particularly STEMIs. There’s also a view that the post MI ratio may also correlate to degree of heart muscle death.
After my STEMI and being on Atorvastatin my LFTs were through the roof. I honestly think they thought I must be a secret alcoholic! But I have only one or two glasses of something once in a blue moon! They stopped statins and levels dropped too normal. Tried half dosage and immediately went through roof again. However they did not replace statins with anything else as they were too concerned about damaging liver Just Hope it’s still ok 😳
Thanks for sharing your story 🙏
Yes Michael, us hearty's should all be very aware of our kidneys. Have you read the NCEPOD (National Confidential Enquiry into Patient Outcome & Death) Report "Adding Insult to Injury". It is shocking & resulted in the NHS Campaign 'Think Kidneys' in 2016.
"Acute Kidney Injury: Adding Insult to Injury (2009)
This NCEPOD report highlights the process of care of patients who died in hospital with a primary diagnosis of acute kidney injury (AKI). It takes a critical look at areas where the care of patients might have been improved. Remediable factors have been identified in the clinical and the organisational care of these patients."
Thanks i never knew that
Hi No-peep
Mine were elevated after HA too. My GP referred me for an ultrasound which revealed a lesion, but not concerning. My levels reduced slowly back within reference limits over about a year.
I have read that it is likely due to the HA.
Hi there, mine was the same. I was on 80mg Atorvastatin, the GP reduced it to 40mg after consultation with a cardiologist and it seems to be OK now.
I wasn't on any statins prior to HA... Prescribed after as precautionary by cardiologist 🙏
I have been having liver Function Tests since I had my Heart Attack and I know mine is checked because some medications can affect the liver. Perhaps check with your GP.
Hi, I haven’t had a HA but I have HF & cardiomyopathy, 3 months ago my blood tests came back with a problem with my liver after having an ultrasound I have now been diagnosed with Non Alcohol Fatty Liver Disease. I have my 1st appointment with hepatology nurse next month.I’m also nearly tea total!!
