Last year I read on here that anyone taking clopidogrel should not take omeprasole as it can have the potential of stopping clopidogrel working. I had no idea about this interraction, and after some talks, my GP agreed to swap me to lansoprazole. has anyone else had this problem?

heart medication interractions
Hi, my GP took me off omeprazole and gave me Lansoprazole for same reason.
Dear momander
It’s quite a shock when you find that your medication has interactions with others.
I found that when any of my meds were changed that my pharmacist held better information than my surgery ever did.
The surgery/ public tend only to follow the information on the slip in the medication box, some of this information can be older than new recommendations.
A pharmacist tends to be updated very quickly { normally electronically } when a change of interaction is given. [ no I’m not a pharmacist ]
Take care
When I was admitted to hospital last year pre stents I was on Clopidogrel already and the A & E Dr put me on omeprasole. When I was admitted the Pharmacist came and saw me and told me they were changing to the lansoprazole for the reasons you said. I have now had the Copidogrel replaced but am still on lansoprazole.
I have omoprazole and clopidogrel since last august x
I take Clopidogrel 75 mg regularly and Omeprazole 20 on a PRN basis . I did not find anywhere the adverse interaction between them. I think you should feel reassured. Recently the pharmacist rang me to query if I am okay with Clopidogrel and I said I have no problem.
When i was changed from aspirin to Clopidrogel my cardiologist did a specific blood test to male sure that it didnt react with the Omeprazole ivwas taking.
Yes this happened to me. I've been switched to lansoprazole while I'm on Clopidogrel. It's not as good as omeprazole though and I have to take double the amount.
Yes exactly the same for me as doctor from my discharge put me in that combination and Cardiologist who I saw privately changed itI had a quad cabg in June 2020 and thankfully recovered however I am just curious on this forum if anyone has any regular checkups from cardiologist or GP
I don’t and have decided to have an annual checkup with my cardiologist privately
I am lucky enough to be able to afford this but would expect the nhs to follow up our group of patients
Thoughts ?
Thanks
Mark
Pharmacists often know more than GPs about med interactions.I phoned the go to pharmacist at the local NHS trust and he was incredible helpful. I take meds for another condition as well as a heart attack.
As a result of the call I got my GP to do a blood test (for B12 and Folate) and found I was low on both as a result of drug interactions.
Not fixed and I feel much better
Yes my other half had to change to lansoprazole for the same reason, trouble was it didn't work as well for his acid reflux and he still struggles but apparently he can stop the clopidogrel after a year and just take aspirin. Then he should be able to go back to the omeprazole as it suits him best.
Hi, also omeprazole and clopidogrel / asprin can have a massive effect on how your bowels work. could'nt think of any other way to put this. x
I've taken, and continue to take Omeprazole 40mg daily, primarily for grade 3 Osephagitis for many years, the fact I have a heart condition and need the same medication is just fortunate.I take it with Clopidogrel and a whole load of other serious medications. I've never had an adverse, or negative interaction between any of them.
My specialist has never raised the issue about Omeprazole and Clopidogrel as being a problem. When I have my next appointment, I will enquire.
I do have regular schedules of receiving vitamin B12 shots, although I can't report feeling any different despite having had them.
The resulting levels will, no doubt tell their own story, when I go for the next appointment.
As for the bowels, no problems.
🙏🙏
Yes I was changed to lanzoprazole. Only problem was both drugs gave me violent diarrhoea and I ended up in hospital on potassium drips
Hi
I believe omeprazole reduces the effect of the drug rather than stops it working altogether due to the level of obsorbtion.
Obviously we're all unique and what works without effect for some wont be the same for others, thats why conversations with GPS, the pharmacist and reading the drug information leaflets are so important.
I found this on a retractable site….Talk to your doctor before using clopidogrel together with omeprazole. Combining these medications may reduce the effectiveness of clopidogrel in preventing heart attack or stroke. Your doctor or pharmacist may be able to offer suggestions on safer alternatives for stomach acid or ulcer while you are being treated with clopidogrel. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.drugs.com/interactions-chec...
I was put on Clopidogrel instead of Aspirin, as I have Hiatus Hernia Acid Reflux, Recently I was advised to stop Esomeprazole recently with a reason that Clopidogrel is less effective taking it with Esomeprazole, as per new research, therefore My PPI medication Esomeprazole was replaced with Lansaprozale
