Hoping to return to work...

Suffered massive heart attack in June this year, lots of ups and downs, fast forward to today... had a telephone meeting with my HR dept yesterday, who asked after my health, I gave them a fairly positive reflection on how I am at the minute. In reality I have been diagnosed with Severe Heart Failure with and EF of 21. Although I am still out of breath on occasion I feel pretty good most of the time.

My biggest concern is they are now initiating Occupational Health to confirm if I am able to return to work. When they hear the diagnosis are they likely to think the worst.

Your HR dept will need you written consent to access your medical records. Your Dr should { I know the problems } have issued you or direct to your HR dept a fit note.

This fit note will explain the level of your fitness and the prognosis of your treatment.

Acas is really easy to access on line and it will explain all your rights etc during your ongoing illness.

In these situations it’ll best to stick with the truth. It’ll depend on what your job is. HR departments can be over cautious because they’re frightened of lawyers and compensation culture.

Hi David, it is a worry. I was off for 12 months after the first HA and in all honesty I returned to work too early. My confidence was shot and within a couple of months if returning, I agree leaving terms with the company.

Don’t feel pressurised into returning. Do it at your pace. Also occupational health should be supportive, mine were.

At the time, now looking back, I wish I’d considered early retirement as my pension would have been enhanced and whilst this still wouldn’t have been great, it might have helped a bit.

Get a pips claim in, that will help you financially (expect to fight for it), and consider every option available. But most importantly, do not go back unless you are ready. Best of luck my friend 👍
