I had an endoscopy on Thursday morning, it turns out I’ve got an hiatal hernia! I’ve got a follow up appointment with cardiology on Wednesday next week to discuss how we proceed.
Due to my symptoms, palpitations and irregular heart rate the gastroenterologist believes an operation maybe the way forward.
It’s crazy to think that this has caused all my symptoms. Hopefully once this is sorted my palpitations will disappear.

Hi Carl98k, I was really interested to read this. I had an endoscopy last year and they found that I had a 3 cm sliding hiatus hernia. I had been on Ranitidine until it became unavailable and had no problems, but the proton pump inhibitors don't agree with me, and I am now on Famotodine which is not as good. I started with palpitations in February of this year and was diagnosed with atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter in August in A&E. GP told me I couldn't possibly be experiencing symptoms from the hiatus hernia, and that there is no operation to correct it. I have subsequently found that there is an op for it. The striking thing I found was that an episode of AF usually starts with the same burning in my throat that I get from reflux. I haven't yet seen a cardiologist, but I will see if I can get to talk to my (new) GP and maybe another endoscopy to see if it's worsened. Please keep us updated .
I had chest pain, palpitations and high/low heart rate. The cardiologist carried out a number of tests. I’ve had a stress test and a cardiac anagram and all came back clear.
Once anything sinister was ruled out, my cardiologist said he’s 99% sure it was gastro issue.
This has now been confirmed by the endoscopy, and by all accounts it’s quite a large hernia.
Depending how the hernia effects you seems to depend on the action. If I was just getting pain then I’d ignore it. But as it’s causing my heart rate to be low (sometimes down to 32bpm) I’m keen for an op.
I’m back at cardiology tomorrow so I’ll update after.
