Hi everyone - can I just say how supportive this group is! I’ve honestly found so much reassurance here recently - so thank you 🙏🏻
Anyway, my question is, are palpitations harmful to a structurally ‘normal’ heart? I’ve been having palpitations and ectopic beats since last October. Had an SVT in nov (210 bpm for an hour) and ended up in hospital for 3 days as troponin levels were elevated (they came down after 6 hours).
I’ve had a 2 week heart monitor and an echo on my heart and been told that I have ‘infrequent atrial ectopic activity causing palpitations’ Ejection fraction is 60%. I’m on 1.25mg Bisoprolol at the moment and been told to wean off at end of Feb.
I’m sure these paliptations are Hormone related (menopause) as I notice them worse at certain times in the month.
My HR went to 125 bpm today just getting up and walking to kitchen. I can bring it down by resting and breathing slowly but it freaks me out and causes so much anxiety.
I am otherwise fit and healthy and I run 3 times a week. This is really affecting my life now.
I’m seeing a cardiologist again in march but in the mean time could anyone tell me if it’s harmful to the heart or could cause damage by going so high without exertion? I just don’t understand how this can start happening all of a sudden and scared when I’ve got to come off the Bisoprolol that it will get much worse 😢
Thank you so much x

Yes you can say how supportive this group is because you are right it is
Everyone is so helpful
I wonder as it is on your mind if anxiety might be contributing to the palpitations as well as anxiety with nothing at all wrong with your heart can give you palpitations
I would start making a list with all these questions and thoughts you have ready for your appointment and hopefully the Consultant will reassure you
They know what they are doing and so after your appointment I hope it will ease your mind
Thanks so much for replying to me again ☺️I think I’ve gotten myself into a bit of a situation where if I feel my HR go up, then I start to panic and it then makes the whole situation worse. I’m trying so hard to tell myself that there’s nothing wrong so a few palpitations won’t hurt me, but I can’t see why the heart would do this if it never has before and also if there’s nothing wrong with it! 😔
I am anxious after what I have been through and the things I feel sends me into a panic
I think in time and especially after you next appointment you will put your trust in them and the more confidence you start building up you will not have as many palpitations as you do now x
It's a long time until March, especially when you are feeling anxious.Have you tried contacting the BHF nurses?

Hi I’m a 59 yr old female, nowhere near as fit as you, I’d be out of breath if I ran for a bus! Similarly though I had a running of racing heart rate culminating in admission with increased troponin levels and put on HA pathway while waiting for an angiogram. Apart from atherosclerosis on aortic valve, my arteries were clear. I’m on bisoporal 5mg a day now while waiting other tests. Like you I’m concerned, they happened for a reason (HR). I’ve watched some videos from Sanjay Gupta cardiologist on you tube. He discusses women and heart conditions. It’s very interesting. I wish you well and hope you have a speedy and positive outcome.
Thank you so much for your reply. I definitely think my hormones are playing a big part in this (also contributing to the anxiety) because the palps are worse in the second half of cycle. I've read so many things about menopause causing palpitations so I think I will have to accept that I need to sort my hormones out (and the anxiety). I've been watching Sanjay Gupta videos - so helpful. Hope your tests go well xx
Palpitations vs panic attacks is another question to think on, or rather relax about.
After many confusing bouts myself I decided to look at it this way.
If I’m resting and the palpitations happen it’s PAfib if I’m worried and stressed it’s a panic attack.
For me this internal judgment allowed me to separate these two similar events into their separate reasons for happening.
I feel, to nearly answer your question, that the stress and worry is worse than the PAfib by miles. I’ve calmed down (most of the time) and reaped the benefits of this understanding.
Try not to push yourself too early too much in you understanding of you new self.
Thank you. Such a good way to look at it. And the palpitations hardly ever happen when I'm sitting relaxing. Deep down I know that I am making the situation worse with my anxiety surrounding it. I really appreciate your reply x
HiI have an implanted heart monitor now for a year due to family history and my palpitations. I am 51 and have menopause symptoms too. In the last year I have realised: since the stress and axiety around needing this monitoring faded so did the palpitations, that hormone surges, lack of sleep, work stress, more than 1 coffee a day, chocolate overdose, fighting a virus all increase the occurence of palpitations. Since taking mineral supplements for menopause symptoms I can have weeks without a flutter if I keep on top of the above triggers. The fact that the heart monitor would record anything dangerous and mean a call from the heart clinic and not having said call also helps any anxiety. So my own conclusion for my situation is magnesium and looking after myself helps meno symptoms which help keep palpitations at bay.
I hope this helps your journey through both menopause and palpitations.
My belief is that our foods have less and less vitamins and minerals, plus ever stressful lives that strip any we may have is the course of many an ailment and NHS visit and until we address this imbalance in our food system/ bodies we will only be treating our symptoms not tackling the causes. Which frustrates me immensely but the likes of Dr Gupta give me hope.
Good luck and good health x I'm off for a health walk in the sun 🌞
Thank you Melliesissy, you are right. I need to address the hormone situation as the palps are definitely worse in the second half of my cycle. Coupled with the crippling anxiety (another meno symptom). The more I worry about them, the worse they are. Glad you are managing to keep on top of yours, it gives me hope. I have just walked the dog in the sunshine, beautiful day. I appreciate your reply xx
Hiya . My Auntie kept getting having palps high pulse for 3 years tried various monitors Caught eventually on a monitor
They reckon it was the menopause that didn’t help - diagnosed SVT.
She is 80 now she noticed when getting hot it made worse . A lie down & cool room helped .
She takes 1 tablet a day for it
( Heart troubles run in the family .
I m mentioned to her about my symptoms .
Other week came on out the blue . Gasped couldn’t breathe then felt really poorly heart racing got home sat still bp dropped But my pulse was 180 on my Apple Watch . Dropped into mid 150 for nearly hour & a half . Showed up on oximeter . Bp monitor . And watch
Felt quite weak after then it just went ! Bk to normal. Drank loads cold water . But too be honest that’s 2 had since last year . Scary
I do get palpitations on & off . Had for years
The Dr told me next time go straight A& E . Also week after had a bad pain front left neck. All day
Had go hospital -bloods ok . But could be my pancreas causing haywire symptoms or
( colon troubles ) .
Have high BP . Which when that hapoened was low . So I’m know where you’re coming from. Anxiety then kicks in .
