Heart a disease and new Job

Hi I’ve just been offered two job opportunities.

One probably stressful, the other 10,000 less,

But will be less stressful. What would you do?

Quoting £10,000 says nothing as it depends on the percentage reduction. Healthy stress is not bad but that brought on by incompetent management (and I saw a lot of it!). At the lower end of the scale a significantly lower salary could result in stress brought on by money worries, etc. I doubt I have helped but hope I have given you some things to think about.

Depends on what type of job…I could handle some stress if I enjoyed the job or felt it was a worthwhile vocation. Having said that, I’d love to be able to slow down myself - I’m just not in the financial situation to do so. Ultimately, only you can decide what’s best for you. Good luck either way 👍🏼

Hi. If you have not already done so, I would set out a full budget, month by month, and see if you can handle the reduction in salary, or maybe a couple of little tweaks to help? Make sure you have a bit in reserve as well. Avoid credit. It might just help, hope it does.

Hi SmokeAKipper,

I would try to imagine myself in a year's time after I had made each of the decisions, to see:

a) How I'd feel if I'd taken the more stressful job with better pay, and then

b) How I'd feel if I'd taken the lower paid but less stressful one.

To see if I can see inside myself and find out which one I REALLY would prefer!

There's always the old favourite of dividing a piece of paper down the middle, positives on one side, negatives on the other. Do this for both jobs. See if it helps sort out your feelings.

Money isn't everything. If you truly wouldn't have enough by taking the lower paid one, which could cause lots of stress in itself, you might be better off taking the more stressful one to start with. If you feel you'd be better with less stress for the sake of your heart, then a drop in salary could be the price you pay for a better, healthier work/life balance.

It's really hard for anyone else to know which would be best for you. You might find you have a preference deep down. If so - go with it. Trying to force yourself into a decision might lead to resentment in the end.

Best wishes with your decision.

Before retiring I had a stressful job for 23 years. If you enjoy the job, as I did, there may be ways to reduce the stress a bit. If you prefer the other job then go for it. Your wealth is your health!

I would simply go for the one I would enjoy most. Enjoyment means less stress. Just bear in mind what stress a salary drop could do.
