OHS 1 year milestone

Smudgebuttonjessie profile image

Well 1 year today since i had OHS with a double bypass, it hasn’t been a straightforward recovery for me as one of the grafts failed resulting in further emergency surgeries but 1 year on i have just returned to work on frontline ambulances again, an achievement as OH said i would never return to work given how poorly i was after the surgery. Just goes to show never give up and believe in yourself. Stay safe ❤️xxx

Morning,

Just loved your post. So up lifting on a Saturday morning.

My surgery went very straight forward unlike you. I was very poorly pre op and in hospital for 7 weeks before the surgery, they were trying to get me strong enough to face the op. So, now 5 years on and my life is good and every day grateful to the medical team that gave me my life back.

You are an inspiration to all here on the forum, and I thank you for the amazing job you are doing.

Best wishes Pauline

Just wanted to say well done, what an inspirational story!

I had a Quad bypass last November and experienced a struggle ever since putting it down to recovering from OHS despite working hard to get fit.

Unfortunately tests have now confirmed 3 of my 4 grafts failed (no wonder the struggle) so staying positive and back on waiting list for more surgery.

Thanks for sharing your story and the invaluable work you and your amazing colleagues do for the public on the frontline!

Best wishes.

So sorry to read your post about having to have some of your grafts redone. Fingers crossed that it wouldn’t be too long before it’s all done and dusted.

Best wishes Pauline

Very sorry to hear about your failed grafts. I used your recovery regime as motivation for mine. I’m nine months over mine, so far no issues. What were the symptoms of failed grafts ?

Hi. QuadroVEINia and I had have had different ways in which this happened, i will leave QuadroVEINia to explain his. For me I became so short of breath and uncomfortable by day 10 after the surgery that i went to A&E, To cut a long story short It got worse and worse and by 11 weeks and many HA’s i had to have emergency surgery. This was due to being mis-diagnosed.

Last year i emphasised on here to people that if something doesn’t feel right to trust your instincts and get checked out.

Thank you. Good to hear you are doing well. Not sure there were any specific symptoms… I’d noticed I was still experiencing the same pre-op symptoms post-op (usual to me) including heavy chest, unable to sleep, very light headed, etc with no noticeable improvement. Cardiologist referred me for MRI/CT scans and they have confirmed my worst suspicions.

Devastated for you. The good thing for you is your determination, keep going my friend . Best wishes, keep us posted!

Wow, that is not good - 3 grafts failed 😳 - my leg scar still looks like an image of trench warfare after a year - not sure I'd want my other leg to show a map of enemy trenches as well!

I hope you get seen to quickly and with a much more successful outcome with the next procedure. 👍

Thank you. Just trusting the professionals at Barts to do what they need to do. Can’t do more than that.

So pleased for you. I was one year post surgery in June and, like you, never thought that I would be able to do what I am doing now! Back to yoga, gardening, walking. Although I have added complication of diagnosed heart failure, but even that has improved. It is amazing what we can go through and recover from.

Excellent news - so does this mean you now have the breathing capability to shout 'nee nah' for longer emergency runs? 😆

Wish you all the best in your return back to work and servign others 👍
