Hi,

Any thoughts on sleeping on side. My physio told me a few weeks ago to try and sleep on back but after 8 weeks everything should be healed - breast bone….

I started sleeping on my side about 8 weeks, I was in cardio rehab and the nurse there said to try if it felt uncomfortable to leave it another week, but it was fine in fact it was bliss😂

Best wishes Pauline

I was back to sleeping on my side after eight weeks.

We all heal differently but I was told that the sternum should have knitted itself back together after eight weeks.

However, don't throw caution completely to the wind as full healing for all the muscle, nerve and sinew trauma resulting from your surgery can take quite a bit longer.

Good luck!

Hello :-)

No one said a word to me about sleeping on my back or side and to be honest from the moment I had my Bypass I have been sleeping on my side it is 5 weeks so maybe I have been doing this all wrong I am not sure but that is where I feel comfortable sleeping on my side x

I was about eight to ten weeks on my right side to start with. It was not the sleeping that was the problem. It was turning back to get up.

Will get better soon

My surgeon said my breastbone was rock solid at the eight weeks but I stayed on my back for a total of twelve weeks as a precaution. Having met someone with an unstable breastbone it's not somewhere anyone wants to go.

Echoing some of the words above - give it a try, if it is uncomfortable, then give it a week - if no discomfort is experienced, enjoy a good nights sleep. 👍

I switched to side by 8 weeks- you will know your body & how it feels. It was so nice to be back to normal while sleeping. You will just a few nights of waking when turning but eventually that stops too!

Had my double bypass in Dec. Never told to sleep in my back. Tried to get comfortable in my right side for several weeks before turning to left. Good luck. All different advice x

I slept on my side from week 6. It was better lying on my right side than on my left. As with exercise, your body will tell you what you can cope with. 😀

My hubby slept on his back after a triple bypass for about 6 weeks.,what we were told was that one morning he would find himself lying on his side. The cardiac nurse said that if it was really uncomfortable then turning over would really hurt and he would wake up. When he didn’t then it was fine to dump the extra pillows and just get comfortable. What freaked him out a bit initially was the clicking noises his sternum made. He could feel it and I could here it, fortunately that’s all past now x
