Does anybody else have trouble getting diagnosed? I've been having heart palpitations for a couple of months now, which are causing anxiety.

It's not always easy to get your abnormal heartbeats confirmed. Unless medics can see an ECG showing your heart is out of rhythm or beating too fast, they can often put them down to stress. I'd find out if your doctors surgery has an ECG recording machine and get yourself down there when your heart next kicks off.

I used to ring my surgery and say my heart was doing something odd and they would tell me to go straight down for a test.

Yes, I've done that! But by the time I get an appointment it doesn't do it, its really frustrating

How long are your palpitations lasting for and do they make you feel ill?

They get worse as the day goes on, and towards the end of the day I feel dizzy like I'm going to pass out, I also get a headache, and feel shaky, all my bloods came back as normal, so that's why no one will listen to me 😭

my advice: order an alivecor on amazon its about $75-$80 and you can do an ekg at home whenever you want. its free to get readings done. you will have all the ekg’s in your history on your phone through the app and you can show them to your doctor when you go. its a great little device to have because it detects any abnormal arrhythmias.

Blood tests won't show if your heart is beating out of rhythm. Is there someone who can drive you to A&E when you next have an attack? You really need to get what's happening confirmed and take medication to calm your attacks and prevent blood clots forming.

I get shaky! Strange ...its like a funny turn. I had lots blood tests too ,checking for other things that could possibly cause it and cause the palpitations . Still unsure what causes it all .

Yes, I would call it a funny turn too! It happens when I'm just sitting down chatting to my colleagues, its getting quite embarrassing at work now!my legs just start shaking and my teeth chatter and it's hard to speak☹

Hi Shahjahan Try to get an echocardiogram, this will rule out a lot. Secondly ask for a Holter monitor. 72 HRS.

If you can pay to go private to do the echo. that will be faster than waiting for NHS.

Arrthymia Alliance is a support group for people living with heart rhythm problems. They have loads of useful information.

They also have a shop where you cann buy a Kardia AliveCor.

As they are a charity they use the profits from their sales to help fund Arrthymia Alliance.

I have been having heart palpitations for quite some time where at times will miss 4 or 5 beats every 4th or 5th beat! Quite amazingly my GP's don't get alarmed by this, but now after my 4th ambulance trip to A&E I finally appear to have a specialist Cardiology consultant nurse who is really testing me out (previously at Peterborough and Papworth the senior consultants all discharged me!!). I will be having another MRI cardiac stress perfusion scan [my 2nd] as well as a 72 hour tape fitted in the search to discover what is triggering my heart malfunction which causes quite chronic angina pains.Because I also suffer from late onset asthma (although I have never had an asthma attack) and that I have noticed that my heart doesn't start doing wobblies until after the tightening of my chest due to the asthma, I finally persuaded my GP to ask for a round table discussion with both a cardio and respiratory consultant present!

Hi . I've read all the other comments. I have had similar problems. Firstly have they tested you for a b 12 deficiency ? I ask that as that is what caused mine in the past . I now have an injection every 8 weeks. Also not to scare you but things got worse for me and eventually I had to take myself to A and E as none of the doctors where listening to me. I was eventually diagnosed with a mild tricuspid regergation of the heart valve. So it may be worth a visit to A and E as someone else had suggested. Better safe than sorry

Yes I've taken myself to a and e, they did all the blood tests and cant find anything ☹☹

Hi sorry to jump onto this conversation but I’m also suffering palpitations and ectopic beats, sometimes feels like my hearts doing a hiccup or has stopped beating for a couple of seconds. Sometimes it feels like a missed beat sometimes an extra beat, you say you have mild tricuspid valve regurgitation is that a recognised reason for palpitations or ectopics? I had a private echo last month which stated I had trivial to mild tricuspid valve regurgitation and trivial pulmonic regurgitation, could this be a reason for ectopics and palpitations?

Sorry not sure . I think everyone is different. But always better to ask a professional. Although the consultant that saw me. basically did not seem to care or give answers to the questions I asked .

This is true, they don't seem to care! Its starting to get me down now, all I want is to know what is wrong.

My palpitations were down to peri menopause , all tests came back clear , went to A& E twice and I think when they couldn’t find an answer they got fed up of seeing me ! They gave me a mild dose of beta blocka and that helps , I’ve made lots of lifestyle changes also , I’m now teetotal , gave up caffeine and I’ve cut way down on salt and sugar . Hope you find some answers soon .

Hi Shahjahan 76 - I too have been having palpitations. I make sure I don't have items with any caffeine in it. No energy drinks or chocolate causes my heart to palpitate. Being stressed is not good either. There is something definitely going on with your heart but what? My cardio did an Echocardiogram on me. Blood flow through left ventricle of heart not working well. That's what wrong with me but yours might be different. It is very frustrating when medical personnel don't listen to your concerns. You know when something is going wrong with your body, you live with it 24/7, they don't. Hoping for you that find the right person to help you and listens.

I had that, it's frustrating !They caught my palpitations in A&E on a ECG then sent me to a specialist he said i have AF that comes on just a few months a year lasting up to a week! Unsure what causes it (stress i think ) as dont smoke nor drink. He offered me a "pill - in- the -pocket"

Take when ever it occurs ..

If by chance it doesn't work after repeating the medication 5 hours later i need to go to A&E

so they can give me stronger meds.

Apparently its common.

PS if you have any type of heart blockage they don't offer you it..you can find that out by having a heart scan.

HiI had palpitations at rest and I was very lucky that my GP was very proactive. I had bloods and ECG done within a couple of days. This showed an arrhythmia called bigeminy and I was referred to our local cardiology department. They then organised a 24 hour tape and echocardiogram. That diagnosed my mitral valve prolapse and regurgitation which I wouldn't have known about without the echo. Keep pushing for investigations as you never know. Good luck.

Hi I suffer with palpatations. I havd had ecgs, echocardiogram scans etc and mine has been put down n to SVT. I have to give mine 15 mins and if they don't stop I have to go to A&E where I am taken into resus, havd a cannula inserted and bloods taken and the the dreaded adenosine 😕(drug that makes you feel weird but only stays in your system for 10 secs) and it should being the heart rate bk down to normal rate. I had another episode last Thursday. They think mine is stress related and every time I have an episode it's after my feeling stressed. I nvr seem to get any episodes in daytime only between 8pm and 4am 🤔

I too have palpitations while awake, post ,ECG,ecoangiogram,CT scan and finally angioplasty, one stent.I also completed 10 week cardio rehab programme.I started getting palpitations three months after angioplasty .l also gets lot of purping and feeling something stuck in my throat after drinking water or other liquids. It does not affect my day to day activities though,3-4miles walk and 20-25 cardio exercises at home.Doctors don't have much help. They are asking me give it time that everything be fine.

Yep, There weren’t many tests / Dr visits but I felt very dismissed since not enough showed up in the tests I did have. (Bloods, ECG’s, holter monitors).

My symptoms began just prior to a global pandemic being declared & only a few days ago, I was given diagnoses (one thing was noticed in the private cardiology appointment & after a second look thanks to a nurse another thing was noticed ).

Apparently it’s one of the most common reasons that people attend primary care ;having palpitations & no cause being found. Thats something the cardiologist said that the other day.

A holter monitor might be helpful for you in finding out what’s causing your palpitations (?) since it records ECG for hours /days & you press it when there are symptoms so they can look at west was happening with your heart at that time.
