Hi , I had open heart surgery for repair of mitral valve, small hole in the heart and ablation back in November 2020. Op went well according to surgeon. Never saw or spoke to him again, was referred back to local Cardiologist. Post operation appointment was a phone call from her, a echocardiogram and some blood tests. This is just to give a quick history of my journey so far.

My main question is related to my weight gain since the operation,10 kg ! Which with all the excuses by doctors when ask, COVID, lack of exercise etc. I can not accept, as I eat a sensible diet, did all my post op exercises etc. I am getting depressed about it all, as after 8 month post op the weight just keeps on creeping up. I am still on water tablets which have made one difference.

Sorry this is all very long winded, but has anyone else experienced this?

If you diet is good then the only thing you can do to help is exercise? You say you did the post op exercises which is great, what exercise regime are you following at the moment? Presuming your medical condition now allows, maybe you need to up the anti on the exercise front?

There is a simple equation that states that to lose weight calories out must exceed calories in. Your weight gain is about 1kg per month. A kg of extra weight is about 7,000 calories which suggests there is a 250 calorie a day excess. So can either consume less or expend more (if possible as Hidden advises)

Please don't think I am being unsympathetic. Since developing stump problems and being confined to a wheelchair I have to eat less as I gained 5kg in three months. It is hard but doable!
