Statins are great for teeth

Just rare a positive note about statins

I am on Atorvastatin 80mg mega blast dose. I used to suffer badly from dental plaque, it needed scraping off by the dentist every few months. I am now dental plaque free. I now have low cholesterol and sparkling teeth which I acredit to the atorvastatin.

I posted about the beneficial effects of statins on gum disease around a year ago.

Be aware I mentioned this to a cardiac nurse who said there was no connection but I’m going to tell my dentist next week (I haven’t seen him for 2 years) see what he thinks. On a serious note it may be worth “healthy” people getting their arteries checked if they are prone to very high dental plaque build up as I am convinced of the connection.

Did you change your diet before going on a maximum dose of statins or are you eating much the same food and drink?

I don't take statins but have achieved close to zero plaque buildup as a side effect of my change in diet.

Thanks for the comment, I was already on what is known as a healthy “Mediterranean diet “ so there was no change in diet when the dental plaque and cholesterol went down. On the subject of diet I have recently been looking at lowering carbs. This is a whole different subject and May post on it depending on outcome… but no, it’s the statin that dissolved the dental plaque I am sure.Good Health to you I’m glad your diet is working .

I'm on an extremely low carb diet. I discussed it with my dentist and he said it made sense that it would have reduced plaque build up and decay. He's interested to see how things progress as I've also seen some limited evidence that my diet could stimulate some bone and dentine regrowth. Good luck and whatever works if you think it is improving your health.

Good. My low carb experiment is recent, the plaque had already gone but I do think we all might be consuming too much carb .. high fibre low fat diets may eventually prove to be an error . I’m trying to make my fats mainly from fish and olive oil etc rather than meat but it’s a very interesting subject .

Hello :-)

That is a positive , I am on the same med but 40mg , I shall have to take notice and see if mine improve to :-) x

Many doctors will say dental plaque is totally different to artery plaque but our experience has shown statin clears both
