I had a heart attack in December last year and have problems with nausea and reflux having lost a stone in weight due to the nausea. Stent not inserted as I have opted to join the Newcastle Uni. Senior-Rita Trial. Atorvastatin 80mg has been reduced to 40mg and am marginally better and have gained 3 lb in weight but wonder if Simvastatin would have less side effects. Any thoughts on this please?

I'm new here.
Hi,I am on atorvastatin and have lost 10.5 kilos in weight. I have been lucky I guess as it has certainly curbed my appetite. I'm on 40 my as the initial 80 was far too much for my system and I was terribly constipated. When I was in hospital the nurses used to refer to the tablet as " the weight loss pill"
Good luck with everything
Hello and welcome to the forum!
My first thought is are you on a PPI (Proton Pump Inhibitor) such as Omeprazole or Lansoprazole to protect your stomach. If not they cod considerably reduce your symptoms.
The side effects of statins vary considerably depending on the statin and the person. I was changed from. Simvastatin to Atorvastatin to overcome muscle aches but know people who have gone it the opposite.
I have never heard of Atorvastatin referred to as a weight loss drug. Last year I lost 15 kg besides the weight of the leg when I had a BKA (below knee amputation). I have now regained it but am still working on reducing my fat percentage! They tell me its an age thing!
It's amazing how different we are. I cannot tolerate Atorvastatin, Simvastatin or Pravastatin. 10mg of Rosuvastatin on alternative days is the only option for me.
As for PPIs, I cannot tolerate any of them - just a couple of doses will lay me low with aches and a seriously bad head. In my opinion, adding medication to overcome the side effects of another is definitely not the right course of action.
