Hi folks, hoping your all well. I had drug coated balloon inserted today, Im not sure if this is new invention being tried. My question is has anyone else here had drug coated balloon before and how long does it last as iv read maybe only two years, if that's the case then that's not very pleasant as this 3rd time in 14 months I had angiogram. Anyone who has had drug coated balloon before?

Presume you mean a drug-eluting stent. I think that is just the type of stent they use these days rather than a bare metal stent.

It's not drug-eluting stent.

You need to speak to the hospital and find out what it is then.

I did find out its a balloon coated in two different drugs, they insert the balloon inside your blocked artery once the balloon is in side it opens up and realises the drugs they get stuck on to the artery and the balloon is pulled back out, within 60 second the drug starts releasing and over few days it starts working to clear the blockage, so this not so old invention started in our hospital only last 7 years its being tried out.

There are people here who have had stents for many years so the process is not new. Drug eluting stents are standard these days and it's unusual for these to block up. Of course it's possible for people to need further stents over time if their heart disease progresses.

Drug-Coated Balloon (DCB) angioplasty is similar to plain old balloon angioplasty procedurally, but there is the addition of an anti-proliferative medication coating the balloon, as well as an excipient to aid in drug transfer, which may help prevent restenosis. ... Then the balloon is deflated and removed from the body..

Hi,

I had a stent rather than a balloon but I believe the balloon technology was developed to overcome some of the problems with stents such as increased restenosis rates in diabetic patients treated with stents and the difficulties related to stenting bifurcation lesions.

A meta analysis conducted by the BMC found similar efficacy for balloons and stents so hopefully you'll have no problems for a good few years more 😊
