Alot of food tasted strange in the hospital but I figured it was bad hospital food 🙈 but now I'm home anything, sweet (including chocolate😢) or slightly vinegary tastes absolutely revolting and not as it should but like a Metallic Sour Lemony extreme taste that lingers. I also I really don't have much of an appetite at all still.
I am 9 days post-op for the Ross Procedure

I had the same problem, everything, except dairy, tasted disgusting and I mean made me gag and almost vomit disgusting. I could only stomach dairy based foods for some reason, so things like Carbonara and I was prescribed 'Complan' as I'd lost a lot of weight (~3 stone), which I really didn't need to.
Took me probably around 6 months for things to get back to near normal, I read somewhere that if affected, it can take anywhere from a few weeks to a year to regain 'normal' taste.
Since my HA two years ago the meds have changed my taste completely. I no longer like the taste of meat, baked beans taste metallic and sweet things are very, very sweet. I really love the taste of chocolate though so I have to restrict it. Every day I find somethings taste different and my diet has completely changed.
Hi. Yes, I had changes of taste after bypass surgery and I understand that it's very common. I expect everyone experiences something slightly different but, in my case, it was coffee and tea that tasted foul. Normally I would love a coffee. So my preferred drink became warm diluted fruit juice and that tasted OK. It took several weeks post-op to get my taste back to something like normal. I'm 5 months post-op now and everything tastes like it did before.
Oh definitely - All food tasted disgusting! Eventually most of that’s stopped after 3 months but still things taste strange, salt, tomato, beans, garlic. I think it must be the meds as when one got stopped I noticed taste was a lot better.
My wife took it as a massive insult when I told her everything she cooked tasted like hospital food. Turns out my sense of taste had been destroyed.
Hi Tess1406. I have had this problem since having OHS last September. Somedays more than others though!! I even phoned the Dentist and asked her about it, (thinking I had an Infection or something). She told me that it is very, very, common after Bypass Surgery and that it would go away eventually. I sympathise with you, not a nice taste. I suck Mints they do help!!
Hi my taste changed completely after OHS always was savoury person never liked sweets and now I can't get enough of cakes, biscuits and can't take tea anymore, foods a used to love are not appealing to me anymore.Hope it will help X
