Missing doses of Ticagrelor
What did the pharmacist say/suggest?
Thanks for replying so quickly. Pharmacist not there - so nothing I’m afraid!
I would suggest you contact the pharmacist, if not available, contact other pharmacies in your locale or out of hours or 111, ask what they suggest. I'd be surprised if no one in the area has any!
I had to stop Ticagrelor for 5 days prior to having a procedure without any adverse effects.
I did have to wait until I had been on the Ticagrelor 6 months before I was allowed to stop taking it, this did put a delay on having the procedure.
I was still able to take the aspirin and I could restart Ticagrelor as soon as I was out of recovery.
Thanks for such a helpful response.
Just remember that what is right for one person is not necessarily correct for another, hence my suggesting that you speak to a healthcare professional, who would probably ask about why/how long etc you have been taking them.
Without that info. (which you haven't mentioned), it would be dangerous for anyone on here to make assumptions/suggestions.
After my heart attack in December 2018 I was prescribed Ticagrelor for 12 months. I needed to go back as an out-patient 2 weeks later to have a basal cell carcinoma cut out of my chest - at that point the hospital said they wouldn't stop Ticagrelor but would instead manage any bleeding issues. In August 2019 I had an ICD fitted and at that point was told to stop taking Ticagrelor for 7 days prior to the procedure, so clearly it looks like a case of the longer someone has been taking it, the less of a risk a pause is.
That said, I'd definitely ring around other pharmacists who if you show them your last script can issue an emergency supply - if still no joy ring 111 for their suggestions. The other option is a walk-in centre who should be able to provide emergency meds
Should that be August 2019* 😉
Ops! Tardis in wrong gear! Now corrected 😀
Too little is not a risk...too much is.
Nothing to worry about in my case. I had a tooth remover and had to stop ticagrelor for 4 whole days before the procedure.
After my heart attack I was prescribed Prasugrel which only certain pharmacies stock. The pharmacist phoned around and arranged for me to pick up that part of my prescription at another pharmacy. When there's a will, there's a way!
Very early on after my heart attack, although the cardiologist said I'd be on meds for the rest of my life, at no point did anyone tell me that I had to reorder my prescription when my pills ran out. When I was discharged and for a week or so I was in total ignorance when my ticagrelor ran out. I went away for the weekend and did a lot of walking (in an urban environment) I had a tight chest and slight breathlessness, but I lived to tell the tale! As others here have said, too much is bad, a few missed doses not so much.
As a side note, I hated the ticagrelor as I bruised so easily. For some reason I was kept on it for 18 months, when the recommended time is 12 months maximum. I was never so pleased when I was told I could stop taking them (by a pharmacologist who checked with my cardiologist).
