Anyone able to recognise symptoms?

Palpitations, chest pain and dizziness

Hi, I wonder if anyone can offer me any advice. Almost 2 years ago I had a successful ablation for SVT, and apart from a few highs and lows my heart rate has been stable. In the past couple of weeks though I feel like my heart is ‘playing up’ again, but in a different way. Suddenly throughout the day or night (usually at rest) I have an incredibly loud heartbeat, it’s not fast like in SVT, but really loud. It seems to pound in my head and I can’t think of anything else. I’ve also started to feel a chest pain mostly on the left side, which sometimes makes me catch my breath. I also seem to be having short dizzy spells when I feel unsteady on my feet. I am female and 58 years old ( not sure if that’s relevant). I do intend to contact my doctor at some point but just wondered if anyone on here has had similar symptoms.

Thanks for taking the time to read my post.

Do not wait to contact your doctor. No one in this forum can really supply the information you seek. Heart, anxiety, panic, something else? You really need a medical assessment. I hope you are feeling better soon.

Hi Lola. Our hearts (and minds) are really complicated organs and what seems to be one thing can easily turn out to be something completely different. If you are concerned, ask your Dr. Even if it turns out to be nothing it will be on record, which may be useful in the future. Good Luck.

This is not really a place to diagnose more to reflect our experiences. Do not delay. Phone your GP.

Thanks for your reply. I will.

As others have said no one here is qualified to diagnose you, so you really do need to speak to your doctor, particularly in relation to the pain and dizziness, but from personal experience, a very noticeable heartbeat at rest could quite conceivably ‘just’ be an ectopic beat, particularly with your history. SVT is actually triggered by ectopics, so the goal of treatment is to reduce or completely eliminate them, thus reducing or eliminating bouts of SVT, be that by medication or ablation. Prior to my first bout, I wasn’t aware of having ectopics at all, and had never experienced any palpitations in my life other than when exercising strenuously. These days, 11 years down the line, I’m consciously aware of ectopics on a daily basis, even if only one or two.

Hi Charlie, thanks for your reply. I wasn’t aware of my heartbeat before my sudden onset of SVT 2 years ago, and haven’t had any serious episodes since my ablation. I certainly don’t wish to go through those experiences again where I would always end up passing out. I will definitely talk to my doctor. Thank you, take care.

If it’s any reassurance, although I still have daily ectopics, I haven’t had an episode of SVT since 2015: the two are related, in that ectopics trigger SVT, but not intrinsically linked. Ectopics are extraordinarily common and many people have them without issue, it’s usually only when they’re very frequent that those also prone to SVT will develop the condition. My understanding is that the odd, isolated ectopic in a day would be unlikely to trigger an episode. Good luck.

Thanks for the reassurance, it has helped.

If you find out let us know as it sounds similar to what Im inceasingly experiencing whilst awaiting (for over a year) further heart investigations, particularly the loudly thumping heart, although mine is often fast at the time.

I will. I have an ECG and blood tests tomorrow morning, so hopefully if there is something it’ll be found. So sorry you’ve been waiting such a long time. Take care.
