CABG 7 weeks ago. How much exercise should I do. Explain Mediterrian diet. Got no advise when leaving hospital. I'm feeling a bit lost and still suffering with pain in shoulders. Scar healing slowly. I would love to hear from someone insane position. Thank x

Good morning. Your local cardio rehabilitation nurses should be in touch with you to help answer all these questions. They usually get in contact at about 6 weeks post op because they want your chest bone to be fused together before you start a cardio rehab programme. BUT, because of covid, cardio rehab is not running normally (at least it isn't where I am) so you have to look after yourself a bit more.

The internet has plenty of advice on diet and exercise. I'm sure others on this forum will advise. Just to start off, here's the advice from my hospital on diet :

Top tips for a healthy heart

* Aim for at least five portions of fruit and vegetables every day

* Eat one portion of oily fish per week or include vegetarian sources of omega-3 oils

regularly in your diet

* Eat more peas, beans, lentils and vegetables

* Choose plant based spreads such as olive, rapeseed or sunflower oil and limit

high fat dairy foods (butter and cream, full fat milk, cheese and yoghurts)

* Use more whole grains – high fibre bread, oats, brown rice and pasta

* Snack on fruit, crumpets, nuts, low fat yoghurt, high fibre cereals and biscuits

* Limit processed foods e.g. pastries and fast food

* Cut down on fatty meat products (sausages, pies, sausage rolls, streaky

bacon)

* Keep salt intake low by eating less processed, takeaway foods and salty

snacks

* Stick to the recommended alcohol limits (no more than 2-3 units/day for

women, no more than 3-4 units/day men)

Frankly, I would avoid snacking completely!

My bypass was mid-October last year so I'm now 15 weeks post-op. I walk every day for about an hour and do 3+ miles in that time (weather permitting). I also use a static exercise bike. The amount of exercise you do will depend on age, fitness before the operation and how you are feeling. Hopefully your cardio rehab nurses will be in touch with you soon. If not, I suggest you contact the hospital that did your operation and ask them to connect you to the cardio rehabilitation team.

Hi Mart25 hope you keeping well. I'm getting on ok. Started Cardiac Rehab exercise on 8th April. I find it fairly difficult as I'm not very fit. I go twice a week. Wonderful tonsils there. Very small group. All socially distanced and masks. Only 4 or 6 in a very large hall. Telephone consultation with HF nurse on Thursday 6th May. Haven't heard from them since before my surgery. Keep well and good luck with your recovery x
