Possible medication side effects

Hi everybody hope you all had a fantastic weekend, anybody who takes 'Ramipril' and / or 'Bisoporol', do any of you notice when you head out for a steady walk that after 100 meters or so you have to stop and get your breathe or your chest feels a little tight?? I have been experiencing that since taking medication and was wondering if anybody else has been??

Andy.

Hi, Andy7419

I was put on Ramipril after surgery, they changed it to Candesartan as I had the dreaded Ramipril cough! I also take 2.5 mg of Bisoprolol. I can’t say I have found any tightness when walking, I have been on these drugs for 4 years now. Maybe a word with your rehab nurse would be an idea.

I’m normally quite careful when commenting on meds & reactions but I have experience with both & similar reaction to one - that said many people don’t react at all to it.....

I’m still on a reasonably strong dose of Bisoprolol with no trouble at all (many do though). I had a terrible reaction to Ramipril in that my chest felt too tight to get a good, deep breath but my throat wouldn’t allow it anyway (yes, even breathing through my nose) because I’d start coughing uncontrollably with anything other than shallow breathing.

Hope you get it sorted soon.

Steve.

Drew here again there are a few arces on this site who moan about their condition a couple have told me that there cannot be anything wrong with me because I just give advice. You are the first person I have ever told about my self. Life is good if you take it in your stride

Ps no pun intended

Hi Andy your shortness of breath is caused by your heart failure probably not the drugs. The drugs are to improve your symptoms if you are on low doses you may need an increase I my self am on 5 mg ramipril and 10 mg bisoprolol plus a cocktail of other drugs. Had avr replacement 47 years ago. Been stented 10 years ago and had a pacemaker last week I will be 73 this month

When I die it is not the undertaker I am going to it's the scrapyard

Andy

I suggest you mention this to your GP and specialists; it doesn't sound as if the symptoms are necessarily being caused by the drugs. There could be other reasons.

If this seems too large a step, do go and talk to a qualified pharmacist and see what advice can be given as to where to go for help.

It might be the drugs but I suspect you might be making an assumption here that isn't correct.

Hi Andy, I’m on both of them!! I’ve been on Ramipril ( 10mg)since I was 44, I’m now 58, and not felt I’ve had any issues with it.

Had a heart attack in Aug 2020 while walking to shops, and ended up having a triple heart bypass!!!!

To be honest I do feel short of breat and energy but I’m putting it down to it being early days after op.

I walk a mile every day at the moment and try to do as much as I can within reason.

Rehab has been cancelled for me so I’ve not seen anyone yet. Everyone has a different reaction to these drugs, it’s very individual how people react. Probably worth a chat with your consultant?

Will you well.

Hi Andy,

I’m on both of them and have had similar issues as you describe to the extent that at about 4- 6 months post op / meds start I was reduced to taking the bus for just one stop as I could not catch my breath and found walking increasingly difficult and stressful

I also suffered from extreme fatigue and insomnia.

Eventually after about 10 months these difficulties began to subside without any change in meds BUT I'm not the same as before the HA which I guess is to be expected .

All I have to offer is to persevere and in my case at least it does get better with time

Good luck with your continued recovery.

Hi Andy

I am both those medication. I have similar worries and called GP .I send my BP readings to her every week. This is very important to monitor the first few weeks in particular. I get tight chest also early morning and worse lying down.

I am about to go Urgent care at my hospital now to check what's going on.I

do not feel right at all. Bisoprolol lowers the heart rate. Ramipril is dodgy for liver I believe. Get checked would be my advice .I had 4 stents 2 years ago . All good since except when they called me for an ECHO cardiogram 6 weeks ago.

Consultant advised GP to put me on Bisoprolol ...so since I started them I am not feeling right at all.

Good luck....

Hi Andy I am on both of those meds but haven't really had any side effects from them. Just remember it takes time to get used to the new you hun, just listen to your body and if still worried your specialist or doctor are always there. Take care hun stay safe x

Are you taking ticagrelor? That's well known for making you feel breathless.

Bloody hell. I’m terribly breathless. I phoned the pharmacist last week as I’d read about this . Got to send a weeks bp readings in as I’m also really dizzy.

Double bypass in March. Two stents in August. Feel bloody awful. Aching muscles and bones .breathless as well .

Pharmacist was brilliant, GP s not the best . So I’m just going to try and get to the bottom of it . Meds or just me ?

The dizziness is dreadful, I feel very unsteady most of the time. Had a week in bed after the bypass as I felt like I was on a ship .

Not moaning as glad to be still here but would like to feel better than I do !!!!

YOu really do need to see your GP. If he is so bad go to A&E and ask to see a cardio. I didn't have a bypass; just heart attack and two stents but I had dreadful side effects from the tablets. BP tablets dropped it so low I couldn't get out of the chair; felt like I had bad asthma on ticagrelor; hallucinations from bisopralol; terrible muscle pains on atorvastatin; stomach pain from clopidogrel. All were either changed of stopped. There are lots of alternatives so if it is the tablets you need to get them sorted but it's difficult finding out which is causing what. My GP refused point blank to change ticagrelor so as I only had a week before another angiogram I stopped it. I Just couldn't take any more. The consultant was furious because he had to give me an extra loading dose of clopidogrel before doing the angiogram. They really need to listen to patients. They throw the exact same selection at everyone but they must know they don't suit everyone and the side effects can just make all the worry worse. Side effects do usually wear off- mine didn't.

It’s reassuring to hear that even though it’s pretty crap . I’m sending my BP readings in on Wednesday then I will try and physically see a doctor. I’m so sure that it’s the medication that is the problem. I’ve also got a nose that drips like a tap 🚰. Not a good look !!!

God luck and insist on that face to face appointment

On it !!! My docs all disappeared during last lock down, but I think they’ve reappeared.

Hi Andy on both of these meds I had to reduce dose and take Ramipril after tea and Bisoprolol before bedtime that helped hard to tell sometimes what is causing breathlessness

I found also taking caffeine at the moment seemed to cause breathlessness so take decaffinated tea but that is just me at present after nearly 3 months stent I seem to be on track and feel can now do more

Everyone’s an individual if you feel things not working for you do get advice from your cardiologist before any medication change also pharmacist is very helpful re meds good luck to everyone

Does your breathlessness improve after the first hundred yards? I get out of puff quickly if I start off at a good pace without a short five minute warm up, but once my heart rate is up I can walk at a steady pace for a long time without any issues.
