heart suddenly beats really fast for a few seconds during the night

Hi everyone,

The past couple nights I've noticed that when I wake up and roll over, my heart will beat super fast and hard in my throat/upper chest for about 6-12 beats and then settle down. It's only when I've awoken from sleep and I don't notice it during the day, just a bit frightening to feel.

Does it sound like a flutter or palpitation? I feel completely fine when it happens and go back to sleep after it settles down.

Fairly common to have palpitations at night due to the lower heart rate. Also is this from lying on your left to another position, or from turning to lie on your left?

usually rolling from my back to my left side

Most folk I've talked to on these groups, and myself, have found lying on the left to be worse for ectopics, palps or AF, than your back or right. Quite possibly due to different pressures on the heart and its neural network, maybe also the stomach shifting and giving a touch of gastro-cardiac. You might find more on Dr Sanjay Gupta's (of York Cardiology not the american one ) excellent videos on his Youtube channel

Hi,

I do get something similar also, I had a stent fitted about 17 months ago after a mild HA and of course now I watch, feel and notice everything. I note that at night if I role over my heart speeds up and its just the energy required to move, just like when ylu start walling or running, your heart speeds up. it depends on how much, my resting rate is about 45 - 50 I notice at night and when I move it goes to 55 - 60 then settles back down, so it can be a very normal reaction. I note the comments about the left side as I did have a strange day yesterday with a lot of chest discomfort more than usual which worried me, but it was after a lot of hours sleeping on my left which I rarely do as I can feel my heart right on my ribs and feel.the pulsing very specific through my chest if I lay on my left, I actually think, I hurt my left chest yesterday sleeping that way, maybe cramped the rib cage up, I know it sounds very strange but was very real, this morning after a good night's rest on my right side and back, the discomfort has gone, so very interesting comments, thanks everyone. I'm interested if you know by how much your heart races, I wear a Garmin watch to monitor heart rate and excersise.
