Palpitations when sitting to standing

I have been having palpitations (ectopic beats)when going from sitting to standing and standing to sitting. Has anyone else experienced this. I have had every heart test done imaginable and all are normal. Doctors say they are benign. But they bother me and it's hard to ignore them. Has anyone has perimenopause cause this? Anyone experience same symptoms? Help

Have you tried ringing the Heart Helpline team on 0300 330 3311 Mon-Fri 9-5pm or email hearthelpline@bhf.org.uk?

They are very helpful.

Hi Simpson23,

I started having daily palpitations (ectopics or extra beats) about 10 months ago along with other perimenopausal symptoms. I noticed they happen when my heart starts to beat faster or slower - for example when I start walking fast or when I wake up in the morning. Also they happen when I bend forward or after meals (apparently vagus nerve gets irritated in this case). But yes I do believe perimenopause has a role in this and unfortunately I cannot take hormones but some of my female friends who take them are feeling better.

Does your BP change at all? Does it drop when you stand up?

Although I am in my 70s, I had a similar problem some months ago. I ended up in A&E where I was diagnosed with “postural drop”...whereby blood pools in the legs and can make one dizzy. Also I had AF...and treated with Bisoprolol and Apixaban. 6 months on the symptoms have calmed down somewhat.....BUT you really need to find a good cardiologist to treat you. I’m afraid GPs really don’t know how to treat all heart conditions....

As other commenters have mentioned, I would not solely rely on a GP diagnosis. If you have not been referred to a cardiologist I would certainly seek to get an appointment with one. I am now 62 years of age, but since being a teenager, I have always suffered from light headedness simply from standing up too quickly. Since my AVR, I now find that I pause and try and adjust before standing up. This seems to work for me.

Hi

I’ve had ectopic beats and fluttering heart beats since I was 30 Iam now 67: I thought I would never make old bones 😊 it’s always scared the life out of me, even to this day if I have a bad day or night of them, I used to find when I was younger I always got them bad as my period was due! Ive had so many tests done , I’ve been under Barts Hospital for years, they tried to give me an ablation, but they couldn’t bring on the missed beats!

They have always told me they are not dangerous, but it’s still really horrible when they come on...I do try to ignore it more nowadays...try to just take deep breathes through the nose and out the mouth, it does help ..

All the best

Sue

Ask in your Surgery whether they have a doctor who was trained as a cardiologist, then ask to see that person.
