swollen ankles and weight gain

Hello everyone!

I would just like to ask if anyone has any experience in using Furosemide for swollen ankles and possibly stomach in connection with their heart problems. I have been on these since May this year and I am still putting on weight. I have been very active on the treadmill and exercising at home. I am at the end of my tether and have spent the last decade on losing weight and keeping it at a reasonable level. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Hi, I have been on furosemide since my surgery 4 years ago. They certainly help keep my water problems in check! You don’t say if they are working in respect to your ankles or stomach. If the weight gain is water it needs your cardiologist/ GP to look at it. I eat the Mediterranean diet which I have found really good. You don’t say what your heart issues are, hope you can get it sorted.

Best wishes Pauline

hi Pauline!

Thank you so much for your reply

I have congenital heart disease and all the usual problems connected with it. MY ankles are still swollen so I assume it is water.I am on a low dose of furosemide. Due to see cardiologist this December.I will look at the Mediterranean diet.

Many thanks.

Take care

Izzy

Hi Izzy, have to smile have granddaughter called Izzie😊 I am on 40 mg once a day, before having Aortic valve replaced and bypass was in hospital having intravenous drip twice a day to get rid of the water lost 65lbs! It took 7 weeks before my op, but now my heart can pump hard enough with 40 mg daily. I am always checking feet collar bones. A bit paranoid 😂

Eating the Mediterranean diet I have found really easy, love fish so that’s not a problem, hope you can get on with it.

Let us know how you get on

Hi Pauline!

Thanks again for your reply. I am only on 20mg at the moment so maybe that is why I am not losing the fluid and ankles ant stomach are still swollen. That's what I am hoping it is and not putting on weight from eating (lol). Your Granddaughter has a brilliant name ( not that i'm bias, lol ). I will try the diet you suggest but I really don't like oily fish. I will let you know how I get on. Hope you are doing well now after your Aortic valve replacement.

Regards

Izzy

I am fine thanks 4 years on, sounds like your dose may need a tweak! My Granddaughter is as lovely as her name, inside and out😊 she as the kindest heart. Middle one if three sisters, my mother used to say a middle child is always the peace maker! and Izzie is certainly that.

I tend to eat fresh tuna and white fish though do like salmon, have chicken too, eat lots of fresh vegetables and pasta. Don’t feel I am missing anything though I do love bacon sometimes think I can smell it cooking! Because we don’t have a local fish monger I tend to buy my fish from Iceland have found its good quality and very reasonable.

Have you got an appointment with your GP about your ankles? Hope you can get sorted quickly

Great, glad to hear you are doing well. I am now back to work as I was shielding. The nurse who I trust to do my bloods was also shielding and now she is back but I can't get an appointment with her as she is booked up. I have been told to ring back in 2 weeks so I can then arrange for blood test in the half term. I have ran out of tablets so until I have a blood test they won't give me any more, and I do understand that. She is the only one I trust to shove a needle in me ( severe needle phobic ). I will let you know the outcome of tablet dose as soon as I know lol.

stay safe

Izzy

Depending on how swollen I am I have to decide how much Furosemide to take. At a minimum 80mg & maximum 240mg. Have got to know where all the toilets are locally, just in case. Make sure I go for regular blood tests for kidneys and as for diet - I use the seefood one.

Hi Shopman!

Thank you for your reply. I am on 20mg once per day at the moment and even then I got to make sure there are toilets near, lol. I am waiting to get my bloods checked prob in the October half term. I used to also be on the see food diet ( ha ha )

I've been on furosemide for many years although I'm not sure that's wise of my GP. IT was given for swollen ankles but hey weren't caused by a heart problem back then. It was lack of exercise and having had lymph glands removed so legs not draining properly. Can't say they've had any effect except to reduce the ankle swelling. Maybe your dose needs tweaking

Hi Qualipop!

Thank you for your reply. I am only on a 20mg dose at the moment so like you said maybe it needs tweaking. I am trying to get appointment during the October half term as I have now ran out of the tablets and they won't give me any more until my bloods are taken. Hopefully I won't be on them for long ( fingers crossed )

And your GP won't get your bloods done quickly? What a system. Yet other times they go really fast. I had some stuff hand delivered at 10pm last night by the hospital in preparation for some tests next week. Only booked on Friday although it is under the 2 week rule. Still never known them deliver at night like that.

Hi Qualipop!

No it is my problem as I am needle phobic and the only nurse I trust to do my bloods was shielding as was I but now she is back and only available on certain days and I am now back to work, hence the October half term.
