Stress echo

Hi everyone. My 77 year old mum is having a stress echo tomorrow which is a follow up from her heart attack back in February. She’s already had the standard echo but this is now a stress one. I know this is a crazy question but are they safe? And will she be ok? She’s not having to exercise or anything. It’s the one where they do something to make the heart work harder. I’m just worried she’s going to have a relapse. Please tell me I’m being silly

Hi Penny

Your not being silly, it's only your concerns are overtaking your rational thoughts !!

The professionals will have looked at the risk and reward scenario and come up with the plan to use the Echo to assess your Mum. Try to relax and leave the experts to worry!! There is very little to worry over, on what they will see as a pretty routine test.

Wash, Face, Space

ps 77 is now not very Old like it used to be, that's from an almost 73 year old

I always thought 77 was young too but since her heart attack she has changed so much. Lost all her muscle and looks like she’s wasting away. Her boobs have totally disappeared!!! She’s having blood tests to find out what’s going on. So I worry a lot for her x

Hi Penny

It’s natural to worry but there really is no need. Hundreds of these tests are conducted every day across the UK.

In the highly unlikely event that your mum has a reaction to the dobutamine, the staff know what to do. They are with your mum throughout and will talk her through the whole process. Tell her not to be afraid to ask questions if she’s unsure so they can explain everything. They won’t let her leave until they’re satisfied she is fine.

More importantly, the results will allow an accurate diagnosis and inform any treatment she needs.

The terminology can sometimes be a bit confusing so don’t be afraid to go through the report with your GP/ cardiologist so you are clear on what the results mean. Do this rather than getting in to the labyrinth of google - which often just adds to the confusion.

If any issues of immediate concern arise, your mum will be told there and then.

Your mum will be fine.

Best wishes

I was quite worried about having a stress echo as I get tired easily because of non-cardiac issues. I did mine on an exercise bike.

Please don't worry - your mum will have very experienced staff with her all the time and will be very well looked after. The consultant popped in at the end of mine and said I was fine. Staff will provide a drink afterwards if you ask for one.
