Sniff test during echo

Hiya

I had an echo this week and never before been asked to do the sniff test, is there any reason behind this and if it’s normal then why haven’t I done it for all my other echos (I have a lot)

Just a thought

Ali

What is a sniff test for?

A sniff test is an exam that checks how the diaphragm (the muscle that controls breathing) moves when you breathe normally and when you inhale quickly. The test uses a fluoroscope, a special X-ray machine that allows your doctor to see live images of the inside of your body.

It was to check for the inferior vena cava pressure in my heart but is this a normal test?

Thanks Ali

I’m just assuming some doctors take all precautionary measures and some don’t or it could quite possibly be that sometimes it’s the money the more tests they can document the more money they get..

no need to worry, if it’s something serious you would have already known. One day at a time baby steps enjoy each day

Don’t worry about tomorrow for tomorrow has enough worries in itself trust in Jesus 💕

I am asked to do it on most occassions since attending an adult cardiology unit. at my paediatric cardiology unit they did not do it.

Thank you

That’s why I was wondering as I’ve never been asked before

Thanks for asking had an echo on Tuesday and did wonder what the sniff bit was about. Should have asked but had a bit of brain fog, always a bit stressed on hospital visits ;)

My next one's booked for January (lockdowns allowing!). Have to see if I'm asked to sniff. Never been asked to before - and like you, I've had quite a few echoes :)

Hi Alisbabas. Funny I came across this tonight after having an echocardiogram today! I too was asked for the first time to sniff. Then asked to sniff again faster with a bit more force! She repeated this after a bit more checking, also asked me to breath in, hold and breath out on command several times, plus to stop and hold my breath at certain stages. I've never had any of that before. Likewise I forgot to ask why! She checked around my diaphram too and I meant to ask about that and the vagus nerve. I was in there for a long time today compared to previous occasions and this time she let me have a look at the videos of my heart beating, which was fascinating too, especially as I felt quite rested when lying down then my heart suddenly decided to start going into arrhythmia as she was scanning me. It did a bit of fibrillating then ended up settling after a few flutters more and probably a good thing she saw it while monitoring me. She never mentioned my heart murmer at all, I forgot to ask all the right questions, was just happy to put my feet up and rest after the long 4 bus trek to the hospital! I notice your post was from 3 years ago but I've just seen it tonight and its the first year theyve asked me to do all these things never mentioned before. Looks like the new procedure has just reached the midlands!

Hi

It's weird isn't it, I'll ask as I'm due as scan soon.

Thanks
