Is my actual heart healthy ??

Fluffybee profile image
19 Replies

Thought I’d ask if anyone knows the answer.

When I had my unsatisfactory telephone consultation yesterday, with microvascular angina and coronary spasms. Amongst other things I thought were ‘iffy’ he said my actual heart should be healthy it’s just the blood is being restricted because of the spasms,

I had an echo that showed my heart is not pumping correctly at the bottom. He seemed to dismiss that !!!!!!

Does anyone else have the same ?

Hi, out of curiosity did they say what they were going to do about "my heart is not pumping correctly at the bottom"? I presume they have put you on various medication to help with the spasms? has that been helping? Its so difficult getting medical help at the moment, have you spoken to a BHF nurse? they are excellent. HTH

I have no idea what they’re going to do, I think my actual cardiologist said it all fitted with my symptoms of microvascular angina and prinzmetal angina,

Yes they’ve put me on meds that have improved to a point and GTN spray,

My Dr the other day said he’s got to go back to my consultant and relay what I’ve said then make. Decision, felt a bit disheartened afterwards as I thought I’d get answers that day as I’ve, like we all have waited weeks for this call, finally here and still no answers as yet !!!!!

It sounds like the "wheels are turning slowly" just keep on 'at em' and try and keep a diary of how it affects you. Dont give up hope.

Hi Fluffybee, as I understand it if you have MVA your heart is basically healthy...but I agree with Smarticus, speaking to a BHF nurse is a good idea, they are very helpful!

I would want to get an explanation for the echocardiogram, keep pushing!

Adding my voice to Smarticus' excellent suggestion - the BHF Heart Helpline nurses might be able to answer that better for you.

This is the link to their BHF page where you'll find all their contact details - phone-line number and hours, and email.

You could try your GP and ask if he has the result of your echo and if he has ask him to explain what 'not pumping at the bottom correctly' means

I asked the doctor I spoke to today whether having MVA and spasms was likely to cause damage to my heart and he said there was no sign of damage my last echo was normal and blood tests were also normal so I was reassured

You need to speak someone who can explain the echo result to you properly

There is growing evidence that Microvascular angina and vasospastic angina can cause problems including heart attacks, strokes and heart failure.

It is really important to be under the care of a knowledgable Cardiologist and receive the appropriate medication to reduce these risks.

A perfusion MRI is usually the best test to ensure that your heart muscle is okay.

My Cardiologist also tests my heart function with the blood test NT pro BNP which checks that my heart muscle is working well.

Thanks I'm going to make a note if this and ask about it next appointment

although he was very confident that any damage would have been picked up he did say that the condition is not benign and any sign of symptoms worsening or feeling different and I should go back to get checked otherwise he will see me again in 3 months hopefully face to face and review my meds again

Hi, I had a very unsatisfactory telephone conversation last week too. I was very prepared, had lots of questions but the whole thing was so rushed I didn't get to ask them. I was told to stop taking the Ranalazone I was prescribed by a cardiologist via tephone consultation 3 months ago..I was left feeling very confused about everything.

The next day, I emailed to say I was somewhat confused by the consultation and ask for a number of points to be clarified. Following this, the cardiac nurse, who did the consultation tried to call me 3 times and eventually sent an email addressing my concerns.

i cant understand whats going on fluffybee. I have heart problems my doctor wanted to see me after that i was admitted into hospital last week. I was on heart monitor for two days. when cardiologist came he withdrew ramipril and my bisoporol. I had to come off sertraline cause of QT syndrome so three meds have been stopped, im now at home completely confused and going through the most horrendous withdrawal symptoms. After my heart attack i was told i would be on the meds for life. Just confused. I think its different in other areas some seem to have very good support systems which is what we all need. Others are confused and we dont seem to have been given enough information. Im trying to stay positive i do believe this site is very good and everyone is very helpful. Hope you get the help and advice you truly need. Take care. x

Hi angel343

Sorry you’re having a horrible tine.

Did the Dr say why he admitted you and what he saw to do so ?

I found when I was put on 4 meds the Dr’s came around my bed, asked me questions, went off then the pharmacist turned up a while later to give me all these meds but was never explained why or what they do, didn’t even know how to use the GTN spray as in how much each time, per day etc.

Did they explain why they’re taking you off your meds apart from the Sertraline?

Maybe speak to your Gp he may have a letter explaining what’s happened and any plan.

Coming off meds quickly isn’t always a good idea depending on what they are, your Gp will advise you on that as well if you’re feeling really bad.

Try and even get a phone call with your Gp to help you ASAP, do you have a nurse or ring BHF.

I agree this forum is invaluable, I would be struggling so much without it, made such a difference dealing with this and the support is second to none 😇

Let me know how you get on, but I’m with you as in bring lost in lack of info !!

hi fluffybee, they admitted me to hospital as doctor was worried about my blood pressure also my balance and ongoing dizziness and heart rate. Was told i needed to stay on heart monitor but already had done so the week before and cardiogram. It is a difficult time for all at moment as on cardiology ward was quite busy and in the next bed another patient had developed a cough and there was a lot going on. My own doctor telephoned wednesday but had not recieved information from hospital, she is now on holiday for 2 weeks so guess just got to try and be patient and calm, but easily said than done. I know were in unprecidented times but we all need explanations about starting and stopping meds. It is very hard for a lot us us just so glad there is this support, hope you get sorted out soon take care. x

I would ask if they measured your ejection fraction and what the number was.

If it's over 55% then your heart is pumping reasonably efficiently, but it doesn't mean there are not some underlying issues, but it's a measurement that is normally made.

Hi Fluffybee (love the name!)

I am also really struggling to get any information at all from the cardiology teams that are looking after me. I also have MVA but am still awaiting a clear diagnosis. So frustrating!! I'm sure all this uncertainty doesn't help my concern about my health so is detrimental to my heart! It is a horrible time. So what I do is try and take a big deep breath go for a walk or try and do something positive!

All we can do is try and support each of course as well. Right there with you 👍
