Can GTN spray make you feel really tired as a side effect ?

Also I’ve needed to use the spray a few times in a few hours before, can I do 2 sprays in one go then an hour or so later if needed another 2 sprays for a few times without going to hospital, happened a few times but wasn’t sure if they’re all separate sessions or together as I’ve had a few in a row but an hour or so apart ?

Has anyone else had this ?

GTN spray also opens up the blood vessels to the brain that can cause a headache and/or dizziness. This can make you feel tired for maybe an hour. I found it an unpleasant sensation but was put on anti-anginals including Isosorbide Mononitrate and Diltiazem.

At the moment apart from the GTN spray I’m on, Amlodipine, Atorvastatin, Bisoprolol and Isosorbide-5-mononitrate 60XL.

I’m sure these make me tired on top ?

Do you have variant angina and or micro vascular angina ?

I had stable angina angina that became unstable over time. Four coronary arteries were between 70% and 85% blocked (the LAD). After numerous tests I was deemed unstentable and I had a quadruple bypass two years ago yesterday!

Yes, but unfortunately I have a PAD (peripheral arterial disease) issue with my left leg which severely limits my walking. ☹️

That’s a really painful condition on top of everything else, doesn’t help when we need to keep healthy by exercise but if your leg is really painful on top it’s not helping any, is there anything that can be done to help ?

I have a telephone consultation later in the week. My belief is I need angioplasty behind the knee. With CovID the process has been slow as my GP referred me before Easter...

Hi Fluffybee,

I have MVA, if I’m having a bad day it’s not unusual to use the GTN spray several times a day. I find the condition itself makes me very tired sometimes. The GTN spray and GTN patches are the only medication I have as all others I tried either didn’t work or had bad side effects! Try using a hot water bottle or microwave heat pad on your chest for the pain...really helps me.

My husband was told to spray once wait ten minutes then if still in pain spray again and wait ten minutes, if the pain is still there after waiting the ten minutes dial 999 for ambulance.the paramedics gave him aspirin to chew then took him in. It’s happened a few times to him and then they upped the tablets and touch wood he doesn’t get attacks now. It’s probably getting the dosage right. Good luck , stay safe🌈

A website I found useful was heartsisters.org, in particular an article entitled " A cardiologist's advice on how to use this wonder drug". Either go to the website or just Google the article itself. The comments at the end are useful as they illustrate how people use the GTN spray in everyday life.

Everyone who has been prescribed gtn spray should read this. I avoided using the spray thinking that it was a last ditch action and put up with mild angina pain - in futures I will use it as soon as it appears. Thanks for the link

Hi Deluge

That website is so good, described things that mirrored things in my life perfectly.

Learnt quite a bit.

Thank you so much for posting that 😃

Hi Fluffybee, how different information is issued, I was instructed ( if needed ) to sit down use GTN spray once , if No change after 5 minutes use again, if no better 999 hospital, you seem to be given different advice, had you better not speak to your cardiologist department for ongoing advice?

Hi Carpbait

Those of living with microvascular and or vasospastic angina are often given different advice regarding the use of GTN.

Our angina is caused by a temporary narrowing of our coronary blood vessels by spasms.

I don't personally use GTN as it works but I then get worse rebound pain.

Like MintTeaPlease I use hot waters bottles along with a TENS machine , breathing and relaxation techniques.

in reply toMilkfairy

Pleased you have found your own methods of relief, not much information given when you are discharged from hospital, stay safe.

Regards
