Hi, Just to let all of you who most kindly gave me and my husband support through such a hard time of my husband having an AVR today. He has now had his procedure and in ICU, they have just taken him off the sedation and waiting for him to wake up. His blood pressure is high so they have started an infusion of anti hypertensive. We are just preying he wakes up soon. Do anyone know how long roughly it takes to wake up and is it quite normal to developers raised BP after cardiac surgery., and does it get better on its own.
Thank you.

I'm so glad for you he's out of surgery and in ICU. That's really positive. If he's off sedation I'd also say that's positive.
I'm afraid I have no idea what's 'normal' in terms of waking up time - it varies so much from person to person and what's happened in theatre - but it doesn't from what I'm picking up from what you say sound like the ICU team, who do this day in and day out after all, seem overly worried? Which I guess is again positive? But still you won't relax until he is awake of course, and quite right too! And especially hard when you can't be there yourself. But it sounds like he is in excellent hands and getting through the op and into ICU is a big first step. Fingers crossed for you. Good luck! Nic x
I am so glad he is now through surgery and in the recovery phase. Waking times very from person to person as does BP levels, but talk to the ICU staff who will be more than happy to discuss with you.
So pleased to hear he’s out of surgery and now in ICU, as others have said we are all different, from what the family tell me it was about 5-6 hours but went straight back to sleep and it was the next morning before I was really back. I had a problem that they couldn’t get the bleeding under control so kept me under in case I had to go back into the theatre.
BP again everyone is different but don’t worry they will get it sorted. Keep it in your mind he is now on the road to recovery, Let us know how you go, you were on my mind yesterday.
Great to hear his op has gone okay. Recovery times for everything involved with this sort of op are different for everyone, there is no ‘normal’. Hopefully by now everything has settled down and once he’s back on the ward they’ll have him out of bed and walking about in no time - no peaceful lie-ins allowed! I found the nursing staff at Glenfields really helpful and willing to deal with any queries I or my husband had, so do ask them if you have any queries or want clarification on anything.
All the best for his recovery, and make sure you look after yourself too. 💖
I remember my husband was put in a high dependency unit after ICU and then went to a ward. His BP became erratic and he suffered with AFib so he went back to the high dependency unit. Everything was sorted out.
He had a quad bypass on a Monday and was back home Friday!
Give your hubby our best wishes. He'll get through this.
As Wendy says, make sure you look after yourself (easier said than done though!!!).
Thank you. My husband is doing well but his WBC have raised And a slightly raised temperature. The ward have put him on penicillins. I could not understand why they don’t put patients that have cardiac operations on penicillin as a precautionary measure.
Hi Jewel7. This may or may not be relevant for your husband but the lungs take a battering in this operation (they basically collapse when you're under) and so infections and fevers as they reflate and need to get rid of the fluid are common (I got one) and require antibiotics. So that's very normal.
But it sounds like he's doing really well. It's small steps at the moment, but each day should hopefully gradually improve. So pleased for you that he's doing well. And Dr Nic also asks are you remembering to look after yourself?!
Thank you Nic.. I’m trying to keep busy, getting ready for when he comes home. He said he is hoping to come home Tuesday/ Wednesday. This morning he managed to eat some bran flakes and is walking a little so as you said it’s baby steps.
Thankyou once again and to all the hearties for the help to get me through such a frightening time. It was so hard not being able to see my husband and to be there.
So pleased to read your post, as Nic25 as said your lungs have a bit of a hard time, I didn’t have antibiotics but did have a nebuliser a couple of times a day. My oxygen level was a bit low but it started coming up.
Take care of yourself, remember he is on the road to recovery.
