Hi everyone.

Just received a text from NHS saying that I need to isolate for 12 weeks due to my condition? and that I will receive a letter through the post. Does anyone know if it will state in the letter, which condition ?

Thank you

I’ve just got a text message too. I assume mine is because I haven’t got a spleen rather than having a mechanical aortic valve. I’m working from home anyway and my husband has been doing the shopping. He is still working as the firm he works for is classified as essential. Guess we’ll find out more when our letter arrives.

Take care and stay safe.

Hi Fredders thanks for the reply.

I am assuming mine is because I had a repair to my mitral valve 2 and a half years ago, with no subsequent problems and on no medication whatsoever to do with it. I am intrigued. I will see when the letter turns up too.

Stay safe

Hi Thanks for the reply. Did you receive them today?

Letter should arrive in next day or two according to my text message.

Yes mine said the same. Friend who had a letter ages ago said she was surprised I wasnt self isolating for 12 weeks already. My reply to that was, I was told that I was not a high risk, when I called my surgery, so the guidelines have been updated. We will see.

My husband had the letter. He hasn’t left the house in 5 weeks and I haven’t in 3. We now have separate bedrooms and use separate towels , clean everything that comes into house etc. I have just been informed by our surgery that we still should be isolating within house and he should stay in one room. I’m in melt down... I thought quitting work and also self isolating would be ok... apparently not😭

No, the NHS letter doesn’t give a personal reason for recommending you to self-isolate/shield. The letter is for those described as ‘Extremely Vulnerable’. It does list all the conditions that come under this umbrella. Your GP should know the reason.

Thanks Celtic

I have a phone chat booked with him tomorrow, so I will find out then

I got the same text but still no letter. It tells me I can open a window but NOT to go outside not even to put the bins out. Now I am really confused as I have been self isolating for 4 weeks but thought I was allowed to shop once a week for essentials and go for a walk. Help!

lisburb profile image
lisburb in reply toBecksagogo

I know it seems confusing. I have a phone slot today with my GP. Ive just told my elderly neighbour we will need to sort someone else to do her shopping. She was stunned and said its strange as her son, who has far more health problems than me, was told by his GP yesterday, he has no need to self isolate even though he had a replacement heart valve 18 months ago. Lot of mixed messages . Stay safe

Margie21 profile image
Margie21 in reply toBecksagogo

Like you I am also totally confused, I had a text and as yet no letter and because I am nearly 75 I am assuming I have to stay in because of my age. I have back and mobility problems and have a disabled badge. I have had to shop for food, my family are not able or near enough to help me and my neighbours are all self-isolating. I cannot get a slot with any local supermarkets who deliver although they state there will be available slots for vulnerable people. So far I have managed with food but will not have enough for 9 weeks or maybe more......can anyone throw a light on this.....someone I know is also having a food parcel delivered every week......because he is also over 70 and vulnerable but he lives in East Sussex and I live in West Sussex, very confusing. Becksagogo profile image
Becksagogo in reply toMargie21

Maggie may I am in West Sussex too and like you I am on my own so self reliant. I have to go to Tesco during their "old fogies" hour on a Friday morning but am conscious that I am at risk even then.

Margie21 profile image
Margie21 in reply toBecksagogo

Yes, all a worry....seems a bit of a shambles regarding who is vulnerable and who is not, luck of the draw I suppose, because of a recent back problem I am unable to drive to the stores let alone walk and stand in a queue and push the trolley around, thank you for replying and wish you good luck with your shopping.

I had the text 3 weeks ago and my letter last week. It’s rather generic, but reiterated that I had the stay home for 12 weeks and self-isolate. As I had a heart attack and suffer from angina plus another condition for which I take immunosuppressants I was already staying home anyway. Luckily I have a balcony so can sit out there and get fresh air and a bit of sunshine. But like you @Becksagogo my rubbish is piling up as I daren’t go to the communal bins we have here. Having no had two friends go down with this, one of whom got very ill, it’s best to not be tempted to take any chances and on go out if it is a genuine emergency in my opinion. Stay safe everyone!

lisburb in reply toRico166

Ho Rico. I know its very scary. I have had a family friend loose 2 members of their family to this nasty virus, both were poorly already but not with anything that wasnt well under control with medication. Luckily I have a garden and today is bin day and as the bin has been in my garden for the last 2 weeks and im the only one here, I put it out !!! Ill get my neighbour to pop it back at the top of the drive for me. Lots of projects to do around the house and I have an exercise bike on which I do 10K twice a day, thank goodness for daytime TV. Hopefully at the end of 12 weeks I may be a bit lighter especially if I cant get out to buy treats. Take care and stay safe.

Rico166 profile image
Rico166 in reply tolisburb

I am so sorry, I missed your reply somehow. Yes all rather scary and with such conflicting advice and information flying around, confusing too. Things do seem to have settled down now and I have now braved the public dump bins twice - it felt like a great adventure! I just hope that things are starting to come under control and that as a nation we exercise patience and sense and not try and jump start things too quickly and end up right back where we started. Look after yourself

lisburb profile image
lisburb in reply toRico166

Hi Rico,

Good to know things have settled for us all ?? Of a fashion.

I got to talk to my GP again, they still have no idea why I ever got the letter. They said there are plenty, who in their opinion should have and didnt. I go out for a walk daily and have been to the supermarket a couple of times, turned back once as the queue was way to long to stand in. I have managed to get a delivery slot with Tescos which came yesterday. It was the highlight of the day and now have enough food to last 3 weeks, if I plan carefully. I just hope and pray the government are sensible about this getting back to normal. I could screw the necks off some of the journalists who ask questions on the BBC at 5pm every day. If they allow too many people out in an uncontained manner those figures will sky rocket. Rant over, take care and stay safe.

Rico166 profile image
Rico166 in reply tolisburb

I've stayed home and been lucky with deliveries and friends have been fantastic in helping with bread, milk and veg. I agree, I wish they'd just shut up about easing restrictions until we are certain it is the wise thing to do. Far too many factors at play at the moment and surely the health of the nation should be the primary focus, not pounds and pence. Take care and stay healthy!

I wish I had a garden, stuck in my flat on the 3rd floor. I got another text at 8am this morning saying "You can open a window but do not go outside your property".

I'll stick my head out the window every now and then and breathe in all the pollen, not great for my hay fever, lol.

Thank god for my PlayStation 4.

lisburb profile image

Yes a garden is a blessing but with hayfever season upon us, I tend to look through the glass at it more often, think I may have a wasp nest there's so many about.

Hi all i have hocum with obstruction a hole in the heart and 2 leaking valves,i got my shielding letter on the 31st March it does not state your condition just says you are extremely high risk.hope this helps, stay safe and sane all.

I got the letter yesterday. It does not mention the condition which brought about the need to isolate. I asked my GP surgery, by phone, and their records didn't show a need to isolate. I phoned the number on the letter, a local number, and I was told that the letter may have been sent because I am on the"oxygen list". I am prescribed oxygen, but not for a respiratory problem. I await some clarification anxiously. Or do I have a condition no-one has told me about?

Was one of the early recipients of text and letter

I leave the house to walk round garden & up and down drive on a daily basis

It’s a small semi detach but I managed an average of 1.7 miles daily

My wife follows same regime so we are not separated in the house

We started this a week before being ordered as I had my chemotherapy stopped because of risk.

All food etc is disinfected and quarantined 😊

Keep safe

It’s all so confusing! My husband had a quadruple bypass last March. He asked the GP if he needed to self isolate.GP was very vague re this and sent him a short medical summary. He still has AF. It states he had Acute Coronary Syndrome and CKD. He has had no letter or text. He is off work at the moment but not sure if he should be off for the 12 weeks.

MelB51 profile image
MelB51

I have had both the text and the letter. It does not specify the condition, just that based on information held on GP records, you are considered at high risk of severe illness if you catch the virus. I have also had a further text advising me that the government website for registering yourself on, is having problems and they will text me again once the problem with registration have been fixed.

I still can’t get a delivery slot for shopping though🤪🤪

marigoldb profile image
marigoldb in reply toMelB51

I also had a Gov text yesterday, a friend said they are doing the next category of people. I don’t have the conditions stated for the most vulnerable, but only 8 months from new aortic valve and single cabg, also on low dose of Prednisolone for Polymyalgia. And elderly, so I suppose it all adds up!,

I live on my own, and luckily have a garden, but what I notice so much when tv not on, the complete silence everywhere, but a huge increase in the birdsong in the garden!! And that’s great!

Becksagogo profile image

Marigold I hope when this is all over that we remember what a beautiful planet we live on. We are all so busy with our day to day lives that we don't take time to enjoy the simple pleasures in life. I have been watching what I think are starlings. A pair of them. One is only interested in the food he can get from the ground and the other is so vocal she just chatters with the occasional stop for a worm. They remind me of an old married couple.

Just had a good chat with my GP. He was very helpful, he told me I wasnt classed as extremley vulnerable and can still go out for my daily walk and do a once a week shop, but to take great care when I am out. He did go through my whole medical history, took the poor bloke ages, LOL . He said it was probably the mitral repair 2and a half years ago which flagged me up, he did say you can ring the number on the letter and see ifthey will tell you what condition has caused it, so we'll see. Take care everyone and thanks for your helpful comments xx

Hi I’m I the same situation and was told the same by my GP. I had a mitral valve repair nearly two years ago. He said the system would have picked up specific codes and not known that I was OK now and not on medication. Still going to be very careful but glad to have the reassurance from GP. Stay well.

I had letter couple of weeks ago but it didn't say which medical condition I had to why I was in this category. Listed on back page were lists of conditions that were covered but it did not say which I was included in. I am presuming I am in the respitory problem group.

I have had no texts/letters or anything but I chose to isolate myself 9 days before everyone was told too as I had heart failure caused by stress/anxiety diagnosed in 2018.

I know if I go out, even taking every precaution, I am going to stress/worry myself sick once back home thinking the worst. Its not worth it...

Already had to stop watching as much news because of anxiety chest pains... well hoping that's what they were!

I don't want to end up having to see my GP or go to a hospital and add to the burden just because I've worked myself up to heart failure again.

Please take care and stay safe everyone. x

I received a text yesterday afternoon from Gov.uk stating I'm to isolate for 12 weeks and will receive a letter. Unfortunately, my husband is unable to work from home and his firm deems him a keyworker. My concern is that a member of his team has stated that even if he got the virus, he would still go into work! What is the matter with these people?

I have a Type II AV block that is treated by a pacemaker, and mild aortic regurgitation. I also have asthma and COPD and Hashimoto's disease. No text or letter, so I assume I am fairly safe.

I work for the NHS as a Biomedical Scientist so am not on the front line, but am considered to be a key worker and have to commute to London every day to go to work. It wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't for the large number of idiots who don't even attempt to keep 2m distance.

Scary times for all of us.

Stay safe!

I got a text then got a letter from Gov uk. Today got another letter from 10 Downing Street. This afternoon got a phone call to ask how i`m getting on,asking if i had help which i have. She said i could get food parcels every week.

TRST I'm really not sure. You hear about all these wonderful people who are volunteering to help but I'm not sure how somebody like Maggie May would go about getting it. I googled it as suggested but all I got was the home delivery service for pizza!

lisburb profile image

Had a phone call from another gP at the practice this afternoon. They said they had been going through my records and think they have discovered, why, I had received the text. Nothing to do with my heart op, nothing to do with my, slightly over active thyroid, it all stems back to the radiotherapy I had for breast cancer, 25 years ago !!! They can only conclude that it will have severly damaged my lungs ? So I should not go out, I laughed and asked if they thought I would have noticed somethin in the 25 years since then. They slightly laughed and said yes you would have done, they said Im a high risk, but not extremley vulnerable, so just carry on as you have been and take care and stay safe, so until I get the letter and can ring someone to check, I am inside the boundaries of my property. They did say that if any damage had been detected, when I had several chest xrays, when I had my heart op, they would have told me, however I do remember the anaethitist telling me that radiotherapy does damage the lungs but can rarely be seen.

I had the text a couple of weeks ago and the letter last week and then another saying much the same thing yesterday. If you click the link in the text the webpage you get to says the same as the letter. I'm not sure why I'm on the list either, figured it might be the number of items on my repeat prescriptions form!
