I had my 8th attack of svt a few days ago, 190 beats and it took them 4 hours to get it back to 90 in A and E. I refused the ablation a year ago because I was coping but now it is causing me problems, I have had pressure in my chest with the ectopics also nearly passed out several times with what is called syncope. I am 72 have a slight mitral valve prolapse also and on Bisoprolol. I also feel unwell after this bout! I have now decided to have the ablation despite feeling doubtful it will improve my wellbeing, I read about so many failures. I was told this time that my heart will not be able to cope with these attacks( I have had loads of small attacks that don,t last long too) and will eventually go into failure. I spend a lot of time on this site which gives me reassurance that I,m not the only one suffering this. I forgot to mention that I get a feeling that my heart has stopped during the night and jump awake trying to breathe, does anyone get this?

Hi Delnoleen

Sometimes your Heart can Pause mine last a maximum of 3 seconds this showed on a Holter Monitor. Cardiologist is not to concerned so neither am I fortunately !!

Ablations do work for the Majority otherwise they wouldn't be offered on the NHS or under NICE guidelines !!!

Take Care a fellow 72 y.o.

Thanks for your reply. This Svt has worsened, I,m now in fear I will have another attack because I feel I,m on the edge of it all the time,it feels like my heart is just waiting to tumble over the top. Apart from the aches and pains of old age I,m quite active.

I am on Bisoprolol, originally I thought I had some bad side effects from it, but they were unrelated to that tablet. I am 71 and had a mitral valve repair 10 months ago at Southampton hospital and was home in 5 days and recovered really well. Your heart does slow down considerably when you are asleep while your body recharges itself, so feelings that it has stopped are quite normal ( in my non-medical opinion!) I find that it is easier to talk in language that most people can understand rather than medical terms which most people find confusing. Try and relax and don’t worry, this will ease the strain on your heart and you should recover without too much medication, also a positive attitude that things will get better always helps. Hope this Has been helpful. Tom

Thankyou for reply. I was worried at my age whether I would recover well because as we get older recovery is slow. I,m active and do not like sitting doing nothing and I live alone and don,t like asking for help but I don,t want to live waiting for the next attack. Barts hospital will do the ablation,I live outside London.

Hi - I totally understand your replication yo have an ablation as I was the same. However my heart rate went up to 240 + during attacks and my cardiologist said this is not good for heart! Cancelled first appointment for ablation but after attack when driving decided to go for it. Had ablation 5 days ago under sedation. Was not as bad as I had expected - no pain and worst but was having to lie still during procedure (2 hours) and for 4 hours afterwards. Out same day and apart from feeling very tired am fine. So far seems to have been a success. Do what feels right for you - my cardiologist was very experienced in carrying out ablations which

helped.

Thankyou for your reply. I have days when I think I shouldt have the ablation and days when I think to myself will it make things worse for my independence, it’s a gamble really! I,d like to know how you get on after yours, maybe like me you don,t often write on here,I,m on here every day. I think stress has a lot to do with our problem, I,ve just bought and sold a house which was a nightmare, I picked a conveyancer who was constantly making mistakes and the move itself was hard work, my brain was going blank a lot of the time, but now I am settled. I do feel a lot better at the moment.

Hello, I had my ablation yesterday. I was so nervous that I thought about cancelling several times. I am now so glad I went ahead with it. Minimal discomfort and out the same day. Obviously everyone is different but my consultant gave me 90% success rate. Good luck with whatever you decide

Thankyou, you give me hope that it’s the right thing to do. I have an appointment with the cardiologist on 20th January 2020
