Post Angiogram Catheterisation Discomfort

Morning, last Thursday I had a Angiogram Catheterisation procedure. I preferred the wrist entry point, but the other lab where that was done already had someone in there and would have to wait and I was the last patient of the day at 5pm. So, I had to have the Catheter inserted via the groin. Now a week on, I'm feeling dull ache and discomfort in the groin area around where they went in.

Is this normal to be having this dull pain/discomfort a week on from the procedure?

Thanks.

I replied to Dickydon in a separate thread. Here is what I posted:

They used the groin for the leg angioplasty and I had a large black bruise afterwards that started easing after three days. The coronary angiogram was via the wrist. Nothing more than slightly sore for a few days. I would give the cath lab a call before the weekend to double check things.

How did others find it?

Hi Dickydon. I too had my 3 stents done via the groin.

The bruising was monumental - it went right down from my groin to just above my knee, on the right hand side.

Thank God I had the stenting done under a full general anesthetic ( at my insistence) as the extensive bruising, suggests to me that there was a great deal pushing and pulling involved !!

That said, I didn't experience any great pain thereafter, maybe a little discomfort for a day or two but that was par for the couse I understand. After that there was nothing.

So in answer to your question - No, personally speaking, I don't think you should still be in discomfort a week on. That said, we are all different and heal in varying ways, but I'd still suggest you seek medical advice. You first point of contact could be just a quick call to a BHF Cardiology nurse, they are super helpful and would maybe put your mind to rest, or refer you back to your Cardiologist if they suspect any issues.

Hope you manage to get your issue resolved as soon as possible ☺

Thanks for reply WardijaWardija. The niggling discomfort does seem to be easing somewhat now. I'll see how it pans out over next week. Why are the medical people hellbent on giving local anaesthetic, when we have to keep insisting on being knocked out? What us going on here I wonder? Shouldn't we have a choice?

We most definitely should !! I was down to have my first Angioplasty back in May this year. It was a absolute nightmare and had to be aborted, but only after I had suffered over an hour in abject pain on the table, with no sedation at all.

It was the worst pain I have ever experienced in my entire life, horrendous doesn't even come close.

When the time came, a month or so later to have it done again, I refused point blank to have it done without a full general anesthetic.

I'm very pain and medication intolerant, always have been.

They initially tried to dissuade me, offering me instead "local sedation" huh, this is what I was supposed to have been given on the first attempt, so no way was I going to have that torture ever again, nor I told them, the same group of medical technicians, they butchered me and I ended up with bruising from my wrist up to my shoulder, and then had an infection at the point of insertion to boot - another 10 days of antibiotics.

I insisted on a Cardiac surgeon do my stenting procedure ( I know this is not the norm.) and I wasn't being a diva about it, I was just SO traumatised from the first experience, I didn't care . . . .

Fortunately, my request was agreed upon and I was referred to a lovely surgeon, whom I met up with a week prior to the intervention, so that I could ask questions etc. He totally allayed my fears, and gave me the confidence to trust him without question.

Safe to say, the day came - and went, and I remember nothing other than waking up from a nice sleep, being pain free and feeling ravenously hungry 😊😊😊

I'm shortly due to have another Angiogram and yes, you can guess whose going to be doing it !!! It's a no-brainer

Hope you feel better soon ☺
