A new piece of research has found the ideal HbA1c for Type I diabetes is from 6.5 - 6.9 to avoid complications. It appears that if a lower figure is achieved with frequent hypos retinopathy becomes more likely. Type IIs on medication that does not cause hypos can obviously go somewhat lower. Life has just got harder for those on Insulin, Byetta, etc.
